**From abandoned to beautiful. 🌿➡️🏡**

The new homeowners inherited landscaping that had been completely taken over by weeds, so we gave the entire property the reset it needed.

Big cleanup day on this property. 🌳✂️
We removed a roughly 35-foot tree and trimmed back several overgrown hedges to open up the space and make the yard feel much cleaner.
For the hedges, the homeowner wanted them cut back heavily — about half their size. We normally recommend a more gradual trim depending on the plant, but we always listen to the customer’s goals and complete the work the way they want it done.

Everybody looks at the pavers. But the part that decides whether this is still flat in ten years happened before a single one went down.
Digging to depth. Building the base up in layers and packing each one. Setting the whole thing on a slight slope so water leaves instead of sitting there.
None of that shows in the photo. All of it is why the patio does not go wavy after a few Minnesota winters.
If somebody tells you they can do your patio in a couple of days, they are skipping a step. Ask them which one.

Somebody asked how we get the stripes. Two things.
Sharp blade, and we never cut the same direction two weeks running.
The blade matters more than people think. A dull one tears the grass instead of slicing it, and the torn tips go brown the next day. That is why a lawn can look worse right after it gets cut.
The direction is the stripes. Grass lays whichever way you push it. Switch every week and the blades stand back up. The light does the rest.
No paint. No product. Just doing it the same way every time.
We still have a couple of weekly spots open in Shakopee and Prior Lake if anyone needs one.

Getting this question a lot this week, so here it is in one place.
Your lawn is not dead. It went dormant.
Cool season grass is what we all have around here, and once we stack up 85 degree days it stops putting energy into blades and holds everything in the roots. The top goes tan. The plant is fine. It comes back when the nights cool off.
What helps: raise the mower a notch, water long and infrequent instead of a little every day, and leave the clippings where they fall.
What hurts: fertilizer. We know it feels like feeding it should help. In August it does the opposite.

Hey everyone! I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself and share a little about who we are at Heads Up Outdoor Services.

My name is Kevin Krenik, and I'm the owner of Heads Up Outdoor Services. I was born and raised in Shakopee, graduated from Shakopee High School in 2023, and I'll be graduating from the University of St. Thomas this winter.

I've always loved equipment. My Tonka dump trucks went everywhere with me until I was six years old, and now I get to work with the real thing every day. It's pretty cool to look back and realize that's what I get to do for a living. This year has been a huge milestone for us. We've grown enough to hire three full-time employees, and every day we're working to build the kind of company we'd be proud to work for ourselves.

I started this business when I was 15 by leaving handwritten notes on doors and mowing lawns after school to make some extra money. I still remember getting my very first call from one of those notes. I ran inside yelling because I couldn't believe someone actually wanted to hire me. What started as a side hustle has turned into a full-time business.

Today, we maintain over 80 lawn maintenance clients and have completed more than 30 landscape installations already this year. We currently run one maintenance crew and one installation crew. While we want to continue growing, our goal isn't to become the biggest company around. We'd rather stay focused on delivering great work, building relationships with our customers, and making sure every project is something we're proud of.
