The spider in the corner of your ceiling is not hunting you. It's hunting your flies — and it's almost certainly harmless.

Nearly every spider in a North American house is. Most are quietly clearing out the insects you actually don't want around.

🕷️ The range is wider than you'd think:

- At the big end, a tarantula with a five-inch leg span — a docile giant that would far rather flee than bite.
- At the small end, a jumping spider you could rest on a fingertip, with the sharpest eyes of any spider. It stalks prey like a cat, no web required.

The silk is the real marvel. By weight, a spider's dragline is stronger than steel and tougher than Kevlar — and it doubles as the safety rope it dangles from.

Young spiders even fly. They climb to a high point, let out a thread, and ride the wind and the air's faint electric charge for miles — sometimes a couple of kilometers up.

And the two that can actually hurt you are the most misunderstood of all:

- The brown recluse lives only in the south-central US, and gets blamed for far more wounds than it causes. Most "recluse bites" are something else entirely — often a MRSA infection.
- The black widow's venom is potent, but bites are rarely dangerous. She's shy, stays in her web, and bites only when she's pressed against skin.

The one watching from the corner tonight isn't a threat. It's the reason you have fewer flies. 🌿
