Today is International Country Music Day, and for us, it is a good reason to think about the connection between music, place, and the land we call home.

Country music has deep roots in the South and the Appalachian region. Artists like Dolly Parton carried the stories and sounds of East Tennessee far beyond the mountains, while artists like Johnny Cash helped country music reach audiences around the world.

Yet even as the music traveled, its connection to place remained part of what made it meaningful.

We think about building mountain homes in much the same way.

A home should not feel disconnected from the property beneath it.

The terrain matters.

The views matter.

The way the home meets the land matters.

And so does the way the people living there want to experience it.

As Smoky Mountain natives, we have a deep respect for the land we build on. Our goal is not to make the mountain conform to the house.
