🚨 HOMEOWNER PSA: Know What You’re Paying For
Your heating and cooling system is one of the biggest investments in your home. Whether you’re replacing equipment, scheduling a repair, or having annual maintenance performed, you should feel comfortable asking questions about the work being done.
Before moving forward with an HVAC project, here are a few things worth asking:
🏠 Are permits required for my project?
Requirements can vary depending on the work being performed and where you live. Ask what permits apply and who will be responsible for obtaining them.
⚡ Who is performing the electrical work?
If your project involves electrical work, ask who will be completing it and what is included in your proposal.
💧 How will condensation and drainage be handled?
Proper condensate drainage matters. Ask how your new equipment will drain and what protections are appropriate for the installation.
🔧 What is actually included in my maintenance?
Not all maintenance services are identical. Ask what your technician will inspect, test, clean, and check during the visit.
📋 What warranties do I have?
Before an installation, understand your equipment, parts, and labor warranty coverage, along with any registration or maintenance requirements that may apply.
💬 What happens if I have questions afterward?
Your relationship with your HVAC contractor shouldn’t end the moment the installation is finished. Know who you can call if you have questions or concerns later.

🔎 What Exactly Is an HVAC Leak Search?

If your technician tells you your system may have a refrigerant leak, you might hear the next recommended step is a leak search.

But what does that actually mean? 🤔

Your heating and cooling system operates with a specific amount of refrigerant circulating through a closed system. Refrigerant is not something your system should normally “use up.” So if the refrigerant level is low, there may be a leak somewhere in the system.

That’s where a leak search comes in! 🔍

During a leak search, an HVAC technician carefully investigates the refrigerant circuit to determine whether a leak is present and, when possible, where it is coming from. Depending on the system and situation, this may involve inspecting components and connections and using specialized leak detection methods.

Why find the leak instead of just adding refrigerant?

Simply adding refrigerant may get the system operating again temporarily, but if there is an active leak, the new refrigerant can eventually escape too.

Finding the source helps your technician determine what comes next. Depending on the location of the leak, age and condition of the equipment, refrigerant type, and repair involved, they can then discuss the available options with you.

🏡 Think of it this way:
If your tire keeps losing air, you don’t just want to keep filling it forever. Eventually, you want to know where the air is going.

A refrigerant leak can be similar!
