Sometimes old furniture can surprise you. As I sanded the body of this end table, my original identification of maple and oak was proven correct. However, once I sanded the table top to bare wood, I discovered poplar! This shows that the original craftsman used whatever they had on hand. It's not a sign of being cheap, but using what you have to make due. Eventhough they used a variety of lumber, they still put careful thought into the build. A dovetailed drawer, mortise and tenoned apron/legs, using the hardwood for the main structure to make it last, and using softwood for the easily repairable/replaceable top.

Good afternoon everyone! I wanted to make an announcement that I not only build new furniture, but I also repair old furniture! This is a progress photo from a jet black end table that I'm restoring. It's made of oak and maple.

As promised, here's the final project for this month. It's and end table made from ambrosia maple and cherry!

This month's recap:

- Walnut and spalted maple stemmed wine and champagne glasses
- Cherry, white oak, and purple heart inset cutting board (made to fit a camper sink, as to keep counter space free)
- Walnut handled ice cream scoops
- Cherry and maple turtle coasters
- A ton of rough sawn cedar slabs for a surprise project in June!

Overall this past month has been full of fun and somewhat challenging projects. I also have an end table that'll make an appearance tomorrow! I hope everyone had a wonderful May!

This will be the fourth bench that I have restored! Take a good look at the before photos of both the bench (broken down) and the slab (source lumber for slats). By next week it will be transformed!

These are solid maple stair treads with dovetail slots for spindles. My portion of work on this project was to chisel the dovetails square, sand, stain, and finish. This photo only captures a handful of the approximately 24 treads that I worked on.
