After nearly 30 years of maintaining this deck, this homeowner was ready for a change. Over the years, keeping the existing wood deck going meant the familiar cycle of prepping, scraping, painting, and repainting.
Eventually, those repeated coatings had effectively closed off many of the gaps between the deck boards, preventing water from draining properly and causing water to pond on the deck surface.
It was time for an upgrade.
We removed the existing decking and railing and replaced the joists and band boards with new pressure-treated lumber, giving the deck a fresh, solid foundation.
We then installed AZEK TimberTech full PVC decking with the proper manufacturer-recommended spacing between boards, allowing water to drain freely through the deck surface as intended. And unlike the old painted wood decking, there’s no more cycle of scraping, prepping, and repainting.
To finish the project, we installed Fairway Designer railing with black balusters, giving the deck a clean, updated appearance.
One of our favorite details is the skirting. Rather than installing traditional lattice, we used the same AZEK TimberTech decking installed horizontally around the perimeter.
It gives the deck a clean, custom-built finish and ties the entire project together.
This renovation included:
• New pressure-treated joists and band boards
• AZEK TimberTech full-PVC decking
• Manufacturer-recommended board spacing for proper drainage
• Fairway Designer railing with black balusters
• Custom horizontal AZEK TimberTech skirting
After nearly three decades of maintaining the old wood deck, this homeowner now has a completely transformed outdoor space that's cleaner, lower-maintenance, properly draining, and built for years of enjoyment.
Take a look through the before and after photos. This one was quite a transformation.
