The longleaf pine in that first picture came off my daughter and son-in-law’s front porch here in Seguin.
They let me keep all of it, and there was a lot of good wood there. As a thank-you, I used some of that same longleaf pine to make them two Adirondack chairs, a small table, and a porch swing.
The house was built in 1912, and the grain in this old longleaf pine is incredibly tight. Counting the growth rings on some of it gives you an idea just how old the trees were before the wood ever became part of that porch. Add more than a century on the house, and you’re dealing with some seriously old wood.
I still have quite a bit of it left in the shop, and it shows up on the website as Higgins Longleaf Pine.
I like that this wood didn’t just come off the porch and disappear. Some of it went right back home in a different form.

This wasn’t a Salt Shaker Woodworks job. It was more of an “I’m doing this for my daughter and son-in-law” kind of project.
As part of the front porch project, several of the old corbels under the eaves had to be replaced. I roughed the new ones out in the shop, then finished shaping them by hand with a chisel before sanding everything smooth and getting them ready for paint.
Once they were finished and painted, the new corbels went back up on the house where they belonged.
The Salt Shaker Woodworks connection to that porch is that all of the old longleaf pine that came off of it ended up in my shop as Higgins Longleaf Pine.

An old Singer sewing-machine base like this doesn’t need anything from me to give it character. My job was mostly to bring that character back where you could see it again.
I took the base completely apart, sanded it down to bare metal, primed it, painted it, and put it back together. The pitman arm was broken, so I tracked down an original replacement and installed it. (That’s the connecting rod between the treadle and the drive wheel—the piece that makes the wheel turn when you work the pedal.) The table doesn’t need that mechanism to work as furniture, but if I was going to restore the base, I wanted it complete and working the way it was supposed to.
The top is mesquite, finished to let the grain do the talking.
Now it has another life as a lamp table, but it still carries plenty of its old life with it.
This one is currently available on the Salt Shaker Woodworks website under Furniture.

Sometimes woodworking has nothing to do with cutting boards, bowls, or anything that winds up in the Salt Shaker shop.
My neighbor and friend Nate had a water line break at his house shortly after they left. It ran for a couple of hours and flooded much of the house, turning what started as water damage into a major remodeling project. Some of the work simply had to be done, and some of it became a chance to make changes they already wanted to make while the house was opened up.
Nate is also the knife maker I’ve teamed up with on a few special charcuterie boards. I made the boards, Nate made the knives, and a few of those collaborations are still on the Salt Shaker Woodworks website under Collaborations.
So when he needed an extra set of hands, I headed next door.
We spent last weekend rebuilding floor framing and getting new subfloor down. Not glamorous work, but good work — and the kind you don’t mind doing when a friend needs some help.
Sometimes the best thing you can build for somebody else is just a little breathing room.

This was our Salt Shaker Woodworks setup at last year’s Seguin Pecan Fest.
We’ll be back in Central Park again this year on Sunday, October 25, from 8:00 to 4:00.
I’ll have boards, bowls, kitchen items, w**e and wh***ey toppers, and plenty of other handmade pieces with me.
Put Pecan Fest on your calendar, and when you’re there, stop by the Salt Shaker Woodworks booth and say hello.

Some pieces are fun to make because of the wood, and some are fun because of what they represent, and this U.S. Space Force wh***ey topper is one of those pieces.

And I have to admit, I like this photograph almost as much as I like the topper. The photographer caught it in midair just before it landed, with the logo still front and center — and right side up.

Simple piece. Good wood. Strong image.

I hate throwing away good wood.

These pieces were cutoffs from another project, and looking at them, I kept thinking there had to be something useful I could make from them instead of throwing them out.

After some squaring up, softening the edges, and adding a few acrylic rods to join them, they became a napkin holder.

Sometimes even the leftovers deserve another chance to be useful.

Sometimes the wood doesn’t have much to say until you start working with it.

This little vase started as a piece of olive about three inches across. Looking at the outside, there really wasn’t much indication of what was hiding inside.

Once I started turning it, the grain came alive. The more the grain was revealed, the more it influenced the shape of the piece.

By the time I was finished, I hadn’t decided what the vase should look like on my own. The wood had more say in that than I did.

I think that last line lands very nicely. It’s simple, it’s true to what you described, and it ties back to Post #1 without repeating it.

Sometimes a piece of wood finds its way back to somebody who already knew it.

This photo was taken at a show in Alpine. She stopped at my booth, picked up this little charcuterie board, and commented on it. When I told her the wood came from the old Seguin High School gym floor, the conversation took a turn I never saw coming.

I got that maple flooring years ago from Mr. Laird, who had taught chemistry at Seguin High School and had some of the old gym floor stored away.

Turns out, she grew up in Seguin, had Mr. Laird as a teacher, and played volleyball on that very gym floor.

So there she was, years later and hundreds of miles away, holding a piece of the floor she once played on.

That’s the kind of history I like being able to keep around.
