🦝 RACCOONS CAN REMEMBER SOLUTIONS FOR YEARS...

Most people think raccoons are simply curious.

They're actually remarkable problem-solvers.

🧠 THEY DON'T GIVE UP EASILY

In studies, raccoons have learned how to open complex locks, unlatch containers, and solve multi-step puzzles to reach food.

📚 THEY REMEMBER

Researchers have found that raccoons can remember successful solutions for years, allowing them to solve the same challenge long after they first learned it.

👋 SENSITIVE HANDS

A raccoon's front paws are packed with nerve endings.

They often "feel" objects before looking at them, almost like using their fingers to understand the world.

🌙 NIGHTTIME THINKERS

Excellent night vision, keen hearing, and nimble paws help raccoons forage efficiently after dark.

🏡 ADAPTABLE NEIGHBORS

Raccoons thrive in forests, wetlands, farms, suburbs, and even cities by quickly learning how to navigate new environments.

❤️ MORE THAN MISCHIEF

Their intelligence isn't about causing trouble.

It's about surviving in a constantly changing world.

🌿 EVERY CHALLENGE IS A LESSON

To a raccoon...

Every locked lid...

Every strange object...

Every obstacle...

Is just another puzzle waiting to be solved.

💬 What's the smartest thing you've ever seen a raccoon do?

Seen a squirrel sprawled flat on its belly, legs splayed out, looking like it just... gave up? 🐿️
Don’t panic. It’s not sick. It’s genius.

IT’S CALLED “SPLOOTING”:
Yes, that’s the real word.
→ Lying flat with the legs stretched out front and back
→ Belly pressed against a cool surface
→ Totally relaxed, often with a sleepy face
The internet’s favorite summer pose.

IT’S HOW THEY BEAT THE HEAT:
Pure survival smarts.
→ Squirrels can’t sweat much, so they dump heat through contact
→ They press their belly to cool, shaded ground, pavement, or branches
→ Heat flows from their body into the cooler surface
That “melted” look is the A/C kicking in.

WHY THE BELLY:
There’s a reason it’s belly-down.
→ They have less fur on their undersides
→ More skin contact = faster cooling
→ Shade + cool surface = instant relief
It’s the smartest spot to lose heat.

IT’S NOT A PROBLEM — DON’T “RESCUE”:
This is key.
→ A splooting squirrel is fine, just cooling off
→ It’s not injured or dying
→ No need to call anyone or intervene
Leave it to chill in peace.

LOTS OF ANIMALS DO IT:
You’ve probably seen it before.
→ Dogs and cats sploot on cool floors
→ Rabbits, foxes, and others do it too
→ It’s a universal ‘too hot’ move
Nature’s group chat all agreed: lie flat.

THE TRUTH:
That “melted” squirrel isn’t dying — it’s running its belly A/C against the cool ground.
Splooting is just summer’s cutest survival trick.
Snap a photo and let it chill.

Have you caught a squirrel (or your dog) splooting? 👇

If a colony of bats is living in your attic right now, there's a window when they can't be removed — and it runs roughly mid-April through mid-August in most states with significant bat populations.

Female bats give birth and raise flightless pups in building roosts during this period. The pups can't fly for about five weeks. Sealing the entrance while pups are inside separates them from the colony.

🌿 The legal method is a one-way exclusion device — installed after maternity season ends. It lets bats exit but not re-enter. Once the colony has left, the opening is sealed permanently.

🐾 What to know:

- Scratching in walls or attic at dusk may be a bat colony, not mice
- Professional bat exclusion services know the legal timing for each state
- The colony eats thousands of insects per night — they're working while they're roosting
- The exclusion window reopens in most states after mid-August
- A single colony in a bat box nearby can keep them close and out of the attic

The pup that can't fly yet is the reason the window exists 🌿
