One of my jobs at Heronswood is planning and putting together a handful of our events and our annual Hydrangea Festival is one of them. It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and showcase the collection.

Most importantly, it has a wonderful ability to draw in a broader audience so I always have to find ways to “PUT ON A SHOW!”

Given our very small staff and limited resources, we have to get creative, which means reaching out to the community and see if they have the interest and the capacity to help see you through your vision.

Not only did the staff do their thing, we had such help and support for this event from Nancy Heckler (who we named a hydrangea after!) , Richie Steffen (who both helped provide cut material for display) Daniel Hinkley with Daniel J Hinkley who agreed to join us for a panel discussion which included local garden educator Nita-Jo Rountree and Hydrangeas Plus Nursery who has joined us each year since we started this event in 2024 selling both the hard-to-find and tried-and-true selections

What really made the show the best and largest ever was the generous delivery of plant material we got in from Bailey Nurseries and their First Editions Shrubs & Trees and Endless Summer Hydrangeas brands showcasing the newest and latest on the market. They even sent one of their sales representatives to take part in our panel discussion and help answer questions from the general public! On top of that, we had tribal youth come out and help unload the plants when they came in.

Of course we also have our wonderful volunteers to thank and also our two tribal vendors who offered food and beverage and hand-made tribal products (salmon chowder with a berry crisp and a devil’s club salve)

Feeling grateful about where I get to work and the opportunities it has given me . Also I’m just absolutely exhausted

It can be really hard to find time to visit gardens when they’re looking their fullest because your full-time job is making sure the gardens you work for looks full for all those visiting. What a treat it was to join the Tacoma Garden Club a few weeks ago and be asked to talk about GROW in the spectacular home and garden of Camille Paulsen

Packed full of wonderful plants and impeccably maintained, I’m always impressed at the level of detail and work that goes into nurturing the treasures we acquire that make up our gardens. It’s also the wonderfully kind and warm company of fellow gardeners and plant enthusiasts that make our region so special!

Back in 2004, I was a student scholarship recipient to attend the annual conference of the American Association of Public Gardens and Arboreta (which is now American Public Gardens Association ) held in Dallas/Forth Worth. I’m honored that Heronswood Garden allowed me to attend this year’s conference in San Francisco in my current role as Assistant Director.

For me, it was a very full week of informative sessions, inspiring keynote speeches, meeting and reconnecting with friends and colleagues from across the country and a most memorable evening event held at the beautiful gardens at Filoli

Visiting East Bay, I was curious about what had become of the former nursery Annie’s Annuals. I knew it was under new ownership as former employees had taken it over and re-opened it as Curious Flora Nursery . No longer was the busy parking lot, the grand exuberance of annual display beds and what almost felt like a city block party with many people happily shopping, browsing and interacting with one another.

But what remains are glimpses of the former greatness and raw potential of a new chapter. The plant selection is still quite diverse: old favorites, nice emphasis on California natives and a few larger specimens of choice staples ready for instant impact.

I couldn’t help but reminisce about the fond memories I have of Annie’s and a few plants that reminded me of previous visits and wonderfully kind people like the late David Feix who has a Abutilon named after him and the very first plant I ever bought at Annie’s, the richly scented, double-flowered true Mexican mock orange.

I introduced myself to one of the owners, Colleen Wheeler, and offered my thanks for continuing on this very challenging venture. I’m excited to see Curious Flora thrive and blossom into a Bay Area garden destination to be enjoyed by everyone once again!
