If your home in Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland, or Renton was built before 1975, three things tend to be true at once.

The insulation was laid by hand and has been compressed by storage, moisture, and time. The wiring — if it's still original — may be knob-and-tube, which doesn't belong anywhere near old insulation. And the crawl-space ventilation was designed for a drier climate than the one we live in now.
