This home was designed as a flexible forever home for a young family, supporting their busy daily rhythms. Thoughtfully designed and richly detailed, the house is built to foster connection and grow with the family.

The kitchen is anchored by a generous island for family meals and casual gatherings. The living room opens directly to a covered deck with skylights overhead, extending the living space outdoors year-round. A feature wall defines the living area, visually linking it to the open staircase and the kitchen beyond, allowing conversations and light to pass easily between spaces.

The staircase is designed as both a circulation path and a display element, with open risers that keep the interior bright, cubbies for special objects, and skylights that wash the space in natural light. At the top of the stair, a “snug” provides a flexible retreat—a built-in desk for focused work, shelves for books, and a reading nook.

The exterior blends durability and craft, with a mix of shou sugi ban charred wood siding, artisan fiber cement in a vertical pattern, and crisp white brick.

CAST welcomes Meredith Kelly to the team! Meredith grew up outside Chicago, Illinois, and earned an undergraduate degree in architectural studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Bound for the west coast, she received her Master of Architecture degree from the University of Washington, where she learned to love the PNW and has called it home ever since.

Her experience includes residential, recreational, institutional, and commercial projects, and as a LEED AP, Meredith is interested in combining sustainability with modern, approachable design. Her ability to connect with clients and stakeholders, and to collaborate with contractors, consultants, and team members, is essential to making each project successful.

We are glad you are here!

Thanks for the feature ! Just north of Seattle, this family home is tucked away on a magical parcel of land within the Edmonds city limits. Designed to maximize the site’s breathtaking views, it is carefully sited to blend into its wooded setting while opening fully to expansive views.

Much of the light-filled interior is wrapped in clear-finished fir, giving it a warm glow even on rainy winter days. White oak cabinets and black soapstone countertops add warmth to the kitchen.

The floorplan is highly efficient, carefully tuned to the family’s daily routines. Each room is exactly suited to its purpose, yet no larger than needed.

The south-facing orientation of this modern farmhouse in the Methow Valley optimizes winter solar exposure coupled with large overhangs to protect from snowfall and the intense summer sun.

The Berm House is post and beam structure with a cross-laminated timber (CLT) roof prefabricated in northeastern Washington. Daylight and views are maximized along the entire south-facing wall.

The exterior employs the Japanese shou sugi ban preservation technique. The boulders throughout the site and as part of the berm were pulled from the site and placed by the owner.

The design incorporates Passive House principles, including managing seasonal heat gain from solar exposure, advanced air sealing, and mechanical ventilation. The earthen roof adds thermal mass, wildfire protection, and a promontory to take in the down valley vista.

CAST’s landscape and architectural designer Will Prescott was on site for the installation of more than 700 plants as part of a revitalized residential landscape in Woodinville.

Corten steel planters, formal gardens, terraces, and wood decks hover above a more naturalistic meadow landscape, extending the gradient between indoors and outdoors.

The landscape and hardscape elements were designed as a unified composition, with hand-placed attention to detail throughout the garden to blur the line between architecture and landscape.

With thoughtful siting, ample views, and an intimate courtyard, this custom home provides year-round connections to the outdoors.

The twelve-foot-high bank of windows and NanaWall in the great room face southwest and provide transparency through the home. The interior wood ceiling extends out through the overhang above the veranda, further drawing the eye out and bringing in the outdoors. The intentional roof height protects from the summer heat and allows the winter sun in to warm the space.

A centerline from the kitchen to the fireplace wall is a nod to formality. The open kitchen, clad in local Douglas fir, was designed for those social interactions that happen best around food. The home’s horseshoe shape creates a gathering space between the wings of the home.

The Rainer Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands, nurtured by the community, is a place where they can come together to grow food in the city. The seven-acre site can produce 20,000 pounds of affordable, fresh produce a year for community members struggling with food insecurity.

This award-winning urban farm transformed a seven-acre tree nursery into an agriculture center for a culturally diverse area of Seattle. It inspires and educates people to safeguard our natural resources while developing an equitable and sustainable food system.

Local food production for a neighborhood abundant with immigrant culture means refugees, who were forced to flee their homeland farms, now pass down food, farming traditions, and identity to the next generation through RBUFW.

At the heart of the farm is the new 1,800 SF Classroom Building. The building program was a result of a community-driven process that led to the design of a flexible gathering space and a commercial kitchen for meals and cooking demonstrations.

The cantilever classroom canopy creates a protected porch for gathering regardless of the weather. Situating the classroom on a slope between two groves of trees at the edge of the site maximizes the arable land in front of the building and minimizes the building profile for the neighbors.

This renovation of a century-old Queen Anne craftsman beautifully balances modern sensibilities with classic style.

The home needed to keep up with evolving family needs. An addition and reorganization of space included a modern kitchen, family room, and entrance from the backyard. The new space, designed with a bank of custom Kolbe windows and doors that mimic the original windows throughout the rest of the home, creates a sunroom that feels like it has always been there. Painstakingly reproduced corbels and ledges around doors and windows match the original details of the historic home.
