In honor of National Higher Education Day tomorrow, we’re looking at trends in education from Gensler’s Design Forecast 2026.

As the cost and value of traditional four-year degrees in the U.S. continue to come under increased scrutiny, investment in trade schools and K-12 learning has increased. At every level, institutions around the world are seeking creative ways to leverage their real estate. Primary educators are contending with AI, so they’re looking for spaces that foster in-person collaboration and community. Meanwhile, universities focus on becoming lifelong learning hubs and growing their global reach.

For the families arriving here from around the world, this place had to feel local before it felt new. Cool greens and deep blues root one building in the quiet of the forest floor; warm, sun-drenched tones lift the other into the dappled light of the canopy above. Between them: a full art walk, building-scale murals, and interiors that carry that same bold, gallery-level energy inside.

Located steps from the light rail and designed with families in mind, The Piper is color-saturated, pattern-forward, and grounded in nature — ready to welcome home residents who toggle between trailheads and standing desks, weekend concerts and school drop-offs.

Happy International Museum Day. For our work with , we partnered with communities across Oregon to reimagine the museum’s brand identity through a more inclusive, accessible, and place-based design system.

The new identity is built around a flexible wordmark, with distinct letterforms inspired by OMSI’s five science learning frameworks. Open-source typefaces support accessibility across languages and platforms, while a color palette inspired by Oregon thundereggs brings local context to the visual system.

Designed to scale across digital and physical touchpoints, the identity unites OMSI’s full ecosystem, from the Portland museum to camps in rural Oregon and traveling classrooms. The result is a brand system that is expressive, adaptable, and rooted in the communities it serves.

May’s material palette celebrates the tactile, artisanal legacy of AAPI cultures, highlighting the ingenuity of craftsmanship passed down through generations. Inspired by natural fibers, raw materials, and organic forms, it feels grounded, earthy, and sophisticated. Bringing the celebration from the abstract to the tangible, the palette reflects how AAPI heritage is built, woven, and nurtured through generations of craft and care.

In the age of AI, tech workplaces are redefining the intersection of human and social capital. Workplaces that put culture and values on display and bring people together for meaningful experiences allow tech firms to attract and retain the best and brightest.

Increasingly, these environments extend beyond the office to the buildings and neighborhoods they inhabit, forming ecosystems that enhance creativity, encourage exploration, and inspire collective action. Young tech and AI companies are being deliberate about where these ecosystems take shape, and they’re reanimating buildings in neighborhoods that were vacated during the pandemic. This way, they can start small, grow over time, and contribute to the broader urban fabric. Establishing workplaces in these locales offers flexibility and potential: if all goes well, they have the space and infrastructure to expand, but they’re not bound to it.
