SERVICES Landscape Design Let us create your dream garden. Together we bring over 100 years of local, national, and international experience to every project, and our enthusiasm is equally boundless. Our design process is enriched by a team whose passions range from botany and horticulture to permaculture, landscape architecture, traditional stonework, landscape history, and garden writing. Each designer brings his or her unique perspective to your landscape, which allows us to fully explore every possibility and truly think outside the box. Your garden will be better because we design and build under one roof: our full-service, quality installations using sustainable, locally sourced materials will ensure that your vision is carried through the entire project. Construction Exteriorscapes builds landscapes to last. The hardscape elements of a garden are often described as its ‘bones,’ and like our bones, a well-constructed foundation supports the longevity and integrity of your design. We believe that durability is a key component of sustainability, and with this in mind we solve problems from the ground up: from a foundation of proper drainage and soils through construction and planting, to the smallest finish detail. We proudly practice techniques of old-world craftsmanship in working with natural stone, wood, and metal, and we eschew mass production and a throw-away attitude in favor of excellence and permanence. We believe in establishing a solid base for plant growth, water management, and efficient garden maintenance. While we design a wide range of size and complexity of projects, we do not implement every design. We build the projects for discerning clients that appreciate the detail and quality a collaborative team of can produce. The appreciation of the details and a desire to have a garden, not just a yard. Maintenance We are no longer providing maintenance services. Garden Coaching Do you want a garden, want to create it yourself, but don’t know where to begin? Have you ever wondered how to properly care for a plant, a tree, or a vegetable garden? Did you inherit a gardener’s garden with your new house . . . only you’ve never gardened before? Are you interested in building your own stone walls, patio, deck, or pergola? Would you like to consult with a garden historian about choosing plants and hardscape that are appropriate for the architectural style of your house? If any of this sounds familiar, you’ll want to explore our full range of garden coaching services. Our coaching program is designed to launch you on a path of self-sufficiency. In the comfort of your own garden, we teach you effective techniques and strategies to create a healthy, delightful outdoor living space where you will want to spend time. To keep your existing landscape in top condition, we offer horticultural coaching, including tips on planting and transplanting, soil improvement, w**d and pest control, plant identification, lawn care, growing edibles, and pruning. Our experienced (and fun!) coaches can also help with plant selection and placement for new areas, design and hardscaping suggestions, and hands-on training in landscape construction. SPECIALTIES Custom Dry-Stone Masonry The craft of dry-stone walls and patios is an ancient and sustainable art form. Dry-stone structures will persist in the landscape for centuries, stitched across fields, through woodland, or lending form, texture, and history to your garden. Stone is visually and spiritually powerful in all seasons and grows lovelier with age, melding seamlessly into its surroundings. Properly built dry-stack stonework is a dynamic extension of the land: held together by gravity, it expands and contracts with the surrounding soil, resisting earthquakes and requiring little maintenance and no repair. We’re known for using traditional dry-stone masonry techniques to achieve new and imaginative results, and we hope you’ll consider keeping this age-old practice alive in your own landscape. Rainwater Harvesting Rainwater harvesting has been a staple of human existence for thousands of years and, until 100 years ago, a common practice in the United States. Today water is the most valuable commodity in the world, and it will only become more precious. We all know the environmental and economic advantage of using less water, but the indirect benefits of rainwater catchment are incalculable and far-reaching: they include reducing the demand on city infrastructure—which in turn reduces city maintenance and associated fees—increasing water security and independence, improving water quality and lessening runoff, and growing healthier plants! Requirements vary with location, weather, season and application, of course, but generally, you can figure 125 gallons for 1000 square feet of lawn, and 118 gallons for an hour of average garden watering. Harvesting, protecting, and managing rainwater requires expertise, creativity, and planning to gain the most from your system. For 15 years Exteriorscapes has been a leader in water catchment in our rainy Northwest region, and we offer the latest technology for capturing water from its source and directing it to your garden. Seasonal Containers Seasonal containers are a colorful way to enhance your garden, home, and life! Arranged singly or in groups, they provide year-round vibrance that can be appreciated from indoors and out. Container gardening is accessible to everyone: ornamental trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, vegetables, fruits, and herbs will all thrive in even the smallest outdoor spaces. Your containers can be changed seasonally or quarterly, and they’re an economical way to enliven your entrance, deck, patio, and even window ledges. They also make terrific gifts! Urban Rooftop and Balcony Gardens Transform a city rooftop or balcony into a verdant retreat with imaginative design and craftsmanship, inspired plant selection, and touches of wood, stone and water. Help insulate your building from heat, sun, and noise while creating a lush, fantastical outdoor space to savor year-round. Water We understand the power and presence of water in the garden. The play of water against stone, concrete, metal, or sculpture is one of life’s great pleasures. Water features bring light, movement, and sound to your garden, covering urban noise and calming the spirit. Fountains, pools, and natural streams are living elements that bring art and nature together in your personal haven. Natural Stone Outcroppings The Cascade region is abundant in natural granite outcroppings, which come in all shapes and sizes. We specialize in hand-selected granite boulders, skillfully placed in your landscape to echo the beauty of natural stone as it would occur in the mountains. This detail demonstrates our respect for the Pacific Northwest landscape and our mission to honor it in every project. Organic Garden Care The practice of organic gardening sustains a balanced ecosystem in the garden. Our firm was founded on this principle and has been building and caring for Seattle-area organic gardens ever since. Healthy soil is at the heart of everything we do: good soil not only promotes plant growth but also protects against invaders and the weather. We work with premium mulches and soil amendments to build a nourishing foundation for your investment, and we will monitor your irrigation, drainage, and soil structure to ensure optimal conditions. We’ve earned a reputation in the organic gardening industry for leading-edge pest management, and we offer a thorough, lasting, environmentally safe approach to cultivating a beautiful landscape where people and plants can flourish.
