Settling into fall at Alder House.

Nestled among the trees in Seattle’s Denny Blaine neighborhood, this 1990s home was reimagined with modern design and Passive House strategies. The renovation strengthened the house's connection to the landscape, creating a warm retreat as the seasons change.

A steep corner lot creates an opportunity for a subterranean DADU and garage.

Nestled along a historic, tree-lined street, the project tucks a garage/workshop and rental flat under the back yard of the existing 1915 Tudor revival main house. A green roof covers the new structure with plants and an unfinished wood rainscreen invites climbing vines.

Alki Lookout is featured on Domino.

We brought a fresh sense of color and personality to this Seattle home, while rethinking the layout around its incredible views of Puget Sound. From colorful tile and pink countertops to built-in storage and a playful exterior mural, every detail was designed to make the home feel more joyful, functional, and distinctly its own.

Thank you to Domino and Zoë Sessums for the feature! Click to read: https://www.domino.com/renovation/alki-beach-seattle-home-renovation-shed-architecture-and-design/

Step inside the Dyes Inlet House.

The house unfolds through a sequence of framed waterfront views and shifting volumes. Shared living spaces stretch along the east-west wing toward the patio, while the north-south wing holds the private quarters. At the intersection, the entry frames the first view of the shoreline, and a loft above the foyer creates a moment of compression before the spaces open into double-height volumes.

Walking into The Mori House, the surrounding forest of Portland’s West Hills fills every window, while natural materials keep the interior warm and simplistic.

That connection to the landscape was central to Saul Zaik’s original 1963 design for his friend and neighbor, interior designer Howard Hermanson. Known for blurring the boundary between interiors and landscape, Zaik established a clear architectural language that guided our renovation. We preserved that spirit while introducing a modern, minimalist approach that supports the way the home is lived in today.

Landscape details in the yard above the Queen Anne Subterranean DADU.

The insertion of a new subterranean garage with a rental flat above necessitated a backyard redesign. This allowed the clients to make new connections from within the historic house to the outdoors. Inspired by their love of curves and openness to historic and modern elements in dialogue, we designed a new living room deck for taking in the view and outdoor lounging. A spiral stair connects the deck to an existing terrace. Curved concrete walls enclose an outdoor dining area, hot tub, and sun deck that overlook the DADU’s green roof and the Puget Sound beyond. With a palette of painted steel, stainless steel mesh, lunawood, and concrete, curves are used to make space, guide circulation, and feel good in the user's hand. Expertly built by the craftspeople Lockhart Suver, LLC and Cooks Welding Services. Now we await the plants!

A sneak peek of our Queen Anne remodel.

Set in Queen Anne, this 1970’s “shed style” house captures expansive views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. The house was surgically reworked to improve the flow, function, and orientation of spaces. A calm palette of white oak casework, light and dark stone tiles and slabs, and white walls serves as a backdrop for the owner's eclectic furnishings collected over decades of working abroad. A long overdue building envelope and systems upgrade, including a large PV array and battery backup system, means this house will be resilient and efficient for decades to come.
