We’re thrilled to support the University of Washington's efforts to restore the landmark ASUW Shell House, a 105-year-old architectural gem and home base of the UW rowing team that rose against all odds to win the 1936 Olympic gold medal. A new film, “The Boys in the Boat,” directed by George Clooney, brings the incredible story to the big screen on December 25th.

Learn more about this inspiring legacy and efforts underway to transform the historic structure into a community gathering space with interactive displays and the legendary Pocock boatbuilding workshop. Mithun has joined forces with our friends at Sellen Construction on this progressive design-build project.

“The Boys in the Boat,” based on the bestselling book, is an ode to the role of college as an engine of opportunity, say the author Daniel James Brown and the UW president.

“For us, design is a holistic, interdisciplinary pursuit that places users and community, not objects and agendas, at the center of decision-making. This integrated approach honors the identity of places—culture, history and ecology—with a reverence for the characteristics that make each unique.”

We are honored to have received The American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2023 Architecture Firm Award at the A’23 Conference in San Francisco.

This national accolade is shared by our entire firm—those we are fortunate to work with every day, and all of the incredible mission-driven practitioners over multiple generations who have helped evolved our practice to what it is today. It’s also for all of our visionary clients and collaborators without whom none of our work would be possible.

As Dave Goldberg shared on stage, “Most importantly, this recognition is a directive for future generations at Mithun and design professionals around the country… An important affirmation that through an integrated design model, with architects as collaborative listeners and leaders, together we can make a positive impact on the critical issues facing our communities and our shared environment. The world has never needed all of us—and all of you—more than it does today.”

Now showing at Mithun’s Threshold Gallery: Interior Hunter, works by Guy Palmer Merrill. Please join us for a reception with the artist tomorrow, April 6th, from 5–7pm.

Using digital photography, Merrill samples his surroundings, deconstructing elements of the built and natural environment which are then recombined in collage and painting. Remnants of a demolished building fill a plaza as if strange geology had abruptly taken place. Pathways cut through landscapes, creating portals to different realms. The membrane between interior and exterior is dissolved, and an interconnected system forms in its place. Human figures and Merrill’s sculptural experiments are also present—either in or outside the frame, as observers or inhabitants.

Threshold Gallery was established by Mithun in 2008 to connect people with art, artists and the built environment, as well as to inspire and drive our work as designers. The gallery is located within our Seattle offices at Pier 56, and is open to the public weekdays from 9am - 5pm.

The Sea Ranch Lodge has been nominated for the ArchDaily Building of the Year award! Learn more about the restoration of this Northern California gem, and cast your vote of support by Feb 15: https://boty.archdaily.com/us/2023/candidates/156359/the-sea-ranch-lodge-slash-mithun

Inspired by iconic Sea Ranch architecture and the wind-swept landscape, the Lodge renovation removed decades of remodels that compromised the original structure and strengthens connections between spaces and the stunning views beyond. Honoring the building’s history, all new elements reflect the simple agricultural language and materiality of the original.

The Sea Ranch Lodge experience was also updated and expanded with a new café, integration of the solarium space into the lounge, and visual connection between the kitchen and dining room. Public areas are now oriented toward the Lodge’s true amenity: a meadow rolling gently toward the Pacific Ocean.
