Two VECA Team Members Receive Mortenson STAR Awards

What started as a celebration for one VECA team member quickly turned into a double surprise.

Recently, the project team at UW Medical Center – Northwest gathered to recognize Joel Steele with a Mortenson STAR Award for his work on the Gamma Knife project. Joel was recognized for his field leadership, trade partner collaboration, proactive approach, and the impact he made throughout the project.

As VECA Superintendent Jennifer Johnson shared a few words about Joel and his contributions, the Mortenson team (Aaron Kerns & Bryson Baligad) had another announcement to make: Jennifer also received a STAR Award of her own.

The surprise recognition honored Jennifer for expertise, collaboration, and team leadership throughout the project.

The Gamma Knife project brought advanced medical technology into an active healthcare environment. The specialized treatment space required careful coordination to meet stringent safety requirements while minimizing disruption to ongoing hospital operations.

Mortenson’s STAR Awards recognize trade partners and individuals who go above and beyond in their contributions to project success. Having two VECA employees recognized from the same project makes this an especially meaningful honor for our team.

Congratulations, Joel and Jennifer! We’re proud to see your work and commitment recognized by our project partners at Mortenson.

VECA Electric & Technologies’ 6th Annual Bellingham Golf Tournament was our most successful yet, helping raise more than $20,000!

On August 1, we gathered at Avalon Golf Links in Burlington for a day of golf benefiting Whatcom Community Foundation. More than a fundraiser, this annual tournament is an opportunity to step outside of our day-to-day work and connect with clients, vendors, electricians, and industry partners in a fun and relaxed environment.

This year, we were proud to support Whatcom Community Foundation and its work to strengthen communities throughout Whatcom County. Their commitment to connecting people and resources to address local needs closely aligns with VECA’s values and how we strive to care for the communities where we live and work.

A highlight of the day was hearing from Emma with Whatcom Community Foundation, who shared more about the organization’s mission and the local impact made possible through community support.

Thank you to our Title Sponsor, , and to and for their generous support. We also appreciate every sponsor, donor, golfer, and volunteer who helped make this year’s tournament possible. Your support allows us to bring our industry together while giving back to an organization doing meaningful work in Whatcom County.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. We’re already looking forward to next year!

10 wings. 5 minutes. No drinks. 🔥🔥🔥

Wingfest 2026 put our Tools, Fleet, Fab, and Warehouse teams to the test with the Buffalo Wild Wings Blazin’ Challenge—10 wings coated in Blazin’ Knockout Sauce with just five minutes to finish.

Four competitors stepped up to take on the heat, with 16 fans cheering them on. Jeremy Folsom took 1st, Jose Garcia finished 2nd, and Ethan Schuler took 3rd. All three conquered the 10 Blazin’ wings, so it came down to time.

And then there was Marcos “I Only Ate 2 Wings” Silva, who earned an honorable mention and a very fitting Participation Award. 🌶️

Everyone received a custom Wingfest hoodie and our top finishers also took home hand-crafted chicken wing trophies to commemorate the occasion.

The night wasn’t just about hot wings. Wingfest gave our teams a chance to get out of the shop, spend time together, and enjoy some friendly competition. After the wings, the crew headed to the track for go-kart races to close out the night.

Work hard, play hard.

Congratulations to Jeremy, our 2026 Wingfest champion, and thanks to everyone who came out and made it a fun night with the team!

VECA’s Annual Company Picnic at Woodland Park Zoo! 🦁

Our company picnic keeps growing right alongside VECA. This year, nearly 1,200 people joined us at Woodland Park Zoo, making it our largest picnic yet! This event is extra special because it includes the families who support our employees throughout the year.

It was a full afternoon of food, activities, and time to explore the zoo. Kids lined up for Plinko and face painting, and everyone learned a bit more about porcupines and owls during the close-up animal encounters. The animal-shaped cotton candy and dippin’ dots were popular as always!

Thank you to the Woodland Park Zoo team for once again helping us host such a great event, and to everyone who joined us from across our different locations.

As part of our VECA Value of Accountability, Appreciation & Abundance, this picnic is one way we show our appreciation for our employees and their families.

We’re already looking forward to next summer!

Miles has been part of the VECA team for three years and is a Project Engineer based out of our Bellingham office. After starting his career in our Service Department, he recently transitioned to our Bellingham Commercial project team. He's currently supporting several projects at Western Washington University, including the new Student Development and Success Center.

“My favorite part about my job is the exceptional people I get to work with. When you're surrounded by talented teammates who trust and support each other, you accomplish far more together than you ever could alone. I'm proud to be part of a team that helps bring meaningful spaces to life.”

Outside of work, Miles has been skiing since he was two years old. That lifelong passion led him to win the 2023 IFSA Collegiate Freeride Skiing Championship in Breckenridge, Colorado. 🎿

Thank you, Miles, for your positive attitude and the impact you're making at VECA.

As part of our VECA Value Empowering Each Other to Succeed, employees are nominated for recognition in our Employee Spotlight feature. We acknowledge the contributions and celebrate the individual strengths of our team members.

SINCE 1946

We've been digging through VECA's archives and uncovering some incredible pieces of our history. Of course...many of the old photos weren't labeled. Who can relate? 😄

These photos take us back to the mid-1960s. While we don't know exactly where they were taken, the equipment and installation suggest one of the industrial facilities that helped support the Pacific Northwest's growing infrastructure. It's a reminder of how much has changed over the last 80 years, and how much has stayed the same.

If these photos bring back any memories or you recognize the project, let us know in the comments!

"I love what I do! My favorite part of my job is taking good care of people. I also enjoy solving problems and finding better ways to support our team."

Outside of work, Ava loves to travel and is always up for a new adventure. She recently rode every roller coaster at Disney World and discovered she loved every minute of it! Her motto? Live it up! 🎢🌍

Thank you, Ava, for the care and commitment you bring to our employees every day.

As VECA continues to grow, we recognize the importance of keeping our values at the center of who we are and how we work. They guide our decisions and keep us true to what we stand for.

Over the next couple months, we’ll be highlighting each of our values. This month, we’re featuring the VECA value: Empowering Each Other to Succeed.

We actively encourage others to identify and pursue their areas of strength while practicing management techniques that promote employee engagement.

But what does that look like in practice?

Recently, we asked leaders from across VECA to share what "Empowering Each Other to Succeed" means to their teams. While every perspective is unique, they all reflect the same commitment: helping one another grow and succeed.

Scroll through to see how different teams put this value into practice.

We'd love to hear from you! Share a time when someone empowered you to succeed or when you empowered someone else.

Follow along as we feature each of VECA's values and show how they're reflected in our work every day.

Each year, VECA's Operational Excellence Meeting brings our project managers together to invest in what drives successful projects: stronger ex*****on, shared knowledge, and continuous improvement.

Project managers from our Seattle, Bellingham, Wenatchee, Quincy, and Boise offices spent the day learning from one another and discussing topics that directly impact the work we do every day. Sessions covered financial ownership, contract awareness, project handoffs, new technology, and how our values guide the way we lead and make decisions.

Thank you to everyone who presented. Your willingness to share your knowledge and experience continues to strengthen our teams and the work we deliver for our customers.
