Installing cedar shingles raw allows for a beautiful patina to develop over time, adding authenticity to the home. This is a common practice in coastal areas, where shingles develop a silvery finish due to saltwater bleaching. This home is on freshwater, so the shingles weather due to light and water exposure. Here’s a lovely example of shingles that are exposed to the elements versus shingles that are more protected due to the entry cover. The variation in color adds depth and character to the exterior of the home.

Vinyl hot tub covers can be a big eyesore, which is why we go to great lengths to design covers the blend in with their surroundings. This hot tub cover at our Newport Shores home transitions seamlessly from deck surface to hot tub, providing protection from the elements, insulation, and a barrier from debris without dragging down the architecture.

Taking inspiration from old-world craftsmanship, we used mitered shingles on the corners of this traditional Cape Code home. Not only do they elevate the architecture, they also have huge weather barrier benefits due to their tighter seal and unexposed shingle edges.

To bring a softness into this contemporary build, we used a parge coat over the concrete walls to make it feel less industrial and more inviting. In this case, the parge coating is a thin layer of cement which fills the voids and uneven textures on the concrete wall resulting in a smooth, refined look.
