Picardo Farm P-Patch

Picardo Farm P-Patch Seattle's Original P-Patch The land was once a bog, which was drained by the Picardo family in the 1920s and turned into rich farmland.

The original p-patch in Seattle, this garden contains 281 plots, on 2 and a quarter acres, and is gardened by local community members. The land was farmed until the 1960's. At that time a neighbor brought teachers, parents and students from Wedgwood Elementary to the land and began gardening for the local food bank programs. Out of this initiative the P-Patch program in Seattle was born.

The 2025 KCD Native Plant Sale is now taking preorders!

Order now for pickup Saturday, March 1, 2025.

kingcd.org/plantsale

KCD’s annual Native Plant Sale offers a variety of native trees and shrubs for conservation purposes such as wildlife habitat, windbreaks, hedgerows, reforestation and stream enhancement. They also work great on home and garden projects.

A majority of the plants offered are bareroot stock which means they do not come in pots or burlap bags, but are harvested from the field in winter when the plants are dormant and ready to be replanted. Bareroot plants are affordable, hardy, have well-developed roots, and are easy to handle, transport and plant.

All sales are pre-order/pre-purchase only. We do not offer walk-up sale of plants during the pick-up dates. We do sell out of plants, so order early for the best deals and availability!

REMEMBERING STUART PRADO
Stu passed away recently. He had moved to the East Coast to be with his father in his dad's ailing years. Stu, a professional gardener and landscaper, will be remembered at Picardo as an avid gardener and contributor to many Picardo projects. Photos below show him at work in his garden, enjoying potluck dinners, operating the trench digging machine for the 3/4 mile of new water system pipes in 2012, delivering a pickup load of gravel for the foundation of the Kids Barn, testing the turn-around area of the SW corner of the garden, presenting a platter of edible flowers to a luncheon group from the American Community Gardeners Association convention, leading a crew in the building of the picnic garden, installing the bench along with Julia Wharton in remembrance of Jack Rucker, and his artistic talents with the Picardo logo.

Plant Sale - Sandra Shaffer
Bake Sale - Kay Clark and Marcia Smith
Children's Garden Lemonade - Darcy Nestorovic
Leftover Plant Sale - Ling Zhang

This year's event required last-minute setting up of several canopies and the great volunteers for the sale managed to get them up just in time.
