: We’re excited to share a sneak peek of our , a waterfront property just outside of Bellingham, WA! This project has been a joy to develop - after all, it is not every day that we get the chance to design a home with a sea plane hangar. We’re putting the finishing touches on the construction documents and look forward to breaking ground in the near future. Here’s a reminder that transformation doesn’t always require starting over - sometimes the most rewarding design work comes from looking inward. Our  remodel stayed within the home’s existing shell, yet crafted an experience that is entirely reimagined. With a considered approach of new high-end cabinetry throughout, elegant stone surfaces, a custom open fireplace, expanded windows and door openings, and a ribbon of exposed architectural steel that completely opens the space, the redesign elevates the home to better suit its captivating waterfront site. Warm limestone and perforated weathered steel become striking features throughout our stables, especially when bathed by seasonal sunlight, further enhancing the beautiful textural movement of these specialty finishes. Located on Mercer Island, this 5-acre equine facility features a stable, arena, caretaker’s residence, and workshop all of which frame a lush central garden and courtyard. Set atop a rocky hillside, the existing landscape at our presented the perfect opportunity to integrate the beautiful massive boulders into the home’s foundational structure. Designed to delicately rest upon the rockface and strategically positioned to maximize the panoramic views of Bellingham Bay, the initial challenges navigating this steep slope resulted in one our of most unique residential sites to date!

With a narrow waterfront site along a steep slope requiring a modest footprint, three stories were essential to fulfill the programmatic needs of our . While each floor excels in creating a rich experience that connects to the waterfront, the custom hot-rolled steel and white oak staircase dramatically anchors and intertwines the home’s three levels as a sculptural centerpiece. This vertical gesture creates a cohesive relationship between the lower-level great room, the mid-level secondary bedrooms, and the upper-level primary suite, tying the entirety of the house together with a functional art piece that appears to defy gravity.

Here’s a behind the scenes look at the recent photoshoot of our working with the talented during some incredibly stunning days out on the lake! We look forward to sharing more of the project in the near future, so stay tuned!

Sitting at the edge of Lake Washington and perfectly oriented towards majestic views of Mt. Rainier, our , built by , makes the most of the property’s waterfront potential by creating a generous home, capitalizing on the stunning views throughout, and creating a tranquil and elevated interior that seamlessly extends towards the waterfront. Warm Cedar and Hemlock wood finishes, steel accents, stone cladding, and refined details can be found throughout the interior and exterior, creating an elegant and calming feel inside and out, while fitting within the context of the PNW waterfront. More to come!

We’re going back to the archives where it all began 25 years ago - the opening of Bellingham’s Chrysalis Inn and the start of McClellan Architects! This project, designed by Founder and Principal Architect Regan McClellan, marked a pivotal moment in the start of McClellan Architects, commencing the firm’s role in Pacific Northwest Modern Architecture in Bellingham and beyond.

Chrysalis, the transformative third stage of a butterfly’s life cycle, became the concept for the design, echoing transformative themes throughout the boutique hotel. The design features a dramatic butterfly roof porte cochere, a series of wing-like lanterns atop the gable roof upstretched like wings about to take flight over Bellingham Bay, and a dynamic three-story sculptural staircase organically intertwined around the structural forms.

Swipe to see some behind the scenes design process images and construction photos for this waterfront retreat with a time capsule image of Regan walking the Chrysalis construction site at the start of his successful career!

After last week’s brief return to winter here in the PNW, we’re back to a Spring state of mind. In celebration of today’s equinox, we’re featuring one of our ‘greenest’ projects to date that sits within the lush landscape of the Tiger Mountain foothills. Designed to create a conscious connection with the surrounding scenery, our features a striking mix of materials, including richlite paneling, warm cedar siding, hemlock soffits, site weathered steel and specially insulated finished concrete floors. Complete with sustainable triple-pane windows, these large openings are strategically placed to capture the stunning views across the 20 acres of this vibrant forested site.
