Environmental Works took a recent field trip to check out construction progress by at Bryant Manor!

For Environmental Works’ Aaron, Director and Senior Architect, this meaningful project has been nearly 10 years in the making, so getting to walk the site with the team and share it in person was a big moment.

As Aaron put it, “It’s been a real pleasure to share the project with our team—and to introduce them to the Compass crew, who have been doing an amazing job and who we’ve built a strong relationship with over the years.”

Moments like these are a great reminder of how many people carry a project forward over time, and just how much those relationships matter!

This one has been shaped by a LOT of hands over the years, all in support of First A.M.E. Housing’s mission to provide affordable housing in the Central District and help keep families connected to their community.

We’ve had a lot of interest in how we came to reside in Capitol Hill's historic Firestation No. 7! 🚒

As the Seattle DON story shares, it was the result of passionate community action in a city ready to embrace change.

We pulled a few of our favorite flyers and letters from the 1970’s archives that we thought folks would enjoy.

People were organizing, writing, and making it clear that this place, and the organizations it housed, mattered. The neighborhood didn’t want another parking lot! 🌎 🕊️ 🤝 💙

It’s refreshing how direct it all is. Show up. Speak out. Take care of your community.

It’s STILL good advice!

Earth Day is our BIRTHDAY!

Environmental Works was founded on the very first Earth Day in 1970, built on the idea that caring for our environment is a shared responsibility, and that design can be a tool to grow real community change.

We sat down with the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods to share the story of how we came to occupy Fire Station 7 alongside other community-serving nonprofits, an early chapter that still shapes our work today.

Read the full story from Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, and celebrate 56 years of Environmental Works with us!

Eight years in the making, and it’s happening!! 🛹

From its inception, Environmental Works partnered with and community leaders to facilitate a series of community design workshops, gathering direct feedback from local skaters and neighbors about what they wanted to see in their new district skatepark. What mattered to them? What sounded fun? What ELSE did they want to see? 📝

What came out of that community feedback was a concept design for a park serving skaters of all skill levels, plus welcoming spaces for the neighborhood to gather.

is leading the skatepark design, and our colleagues at are overseeing final design and construction. , who led the park design while at Environmental Works, is now with Able as the project moves forward, and it’s ✨very✨ exciting to see it happening after all these years!

Nas and Michael visited as framing wraps up and roofing nears completion. A lot is going on all at once! Up next are cover inspections, when all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems are reviewed before the walls are closed up.

What happens now sets the foundation for how the building performs over time, supporting 100 residents with ❤️stable housing❤️ and on-site services as they transition out of homelessness. 🏠

Looking for a way to show up for our community?

On Wed, March 11, our friends at the Homeless Remembrance Project are hosting 🍁 Shake It For The Leaves 🍁—a benefit concert at Chop Suey!

The evening features spoken word poetry by Anitra Freeman and music from Killing Caesar, Nosretep, and Whiskey Voodoo. Proceeds support HRP’s bronze Leaves of Remembrance, a unique permanent public memorial honoring people who experienced homelessness and died. Every person in our community deserves dignity and a place to be remembered.

If you’re able, join us. Bring friends. Help spread the word and support this meaningful work.

Eight years in the making, and it’s HAPPENING!

From it's inception, Environmental Works partnered with Seattle Parks Foundation and community leaders to facilitate a series of community design workshops, gathering direct feedback from local skaters and neighbors about what they wanted to see in their new district skatepark. What mattered to THEM? What sounded FUN? What ELSE?

The result: a design for a 17,000 SF park serving skaters of all skill levels, plus gathering spaces for the neighborhood.

We’re so happy to see this park come to life!

Getting inspired together on our walk to the Asian Art Museum to see Anila Quayyum Agha’s Geometry of Light. It was a great reminder to step away from our desks, spend time together, and reconnect with our larger creative community!

In her solo exhibition, creates immersive rooms laced and patterned with intricate shadows cast from laser-cut steel cubes. The installations underscore the power of thoughtful design — how simple, accessible elements like light and shadow can transform the perception, use, and energy of a space.

The exhibition runs through April 19, and admission is FREE on the first Thursday of each month. The next free day is March 5, so mark your calendars!
