This week’s A4LE Washington Chapter Tour features Hilltop Heritage Elementary in the Renton School District. Featuring a mass timber system, Hilltop Heritage Elementary is a part of the school district’s effort to encourage sustainable construction strategies while providing beneficial learning environments that utilize natural daylight and materials to reduce stress and improve performance. Fora provided the full campus design including structured and nature-based play areas, courtyards, circulation, interpretive signage, and parking. The north side of the school campus is dedicated to play facilities, including a separate outdoor exploration area that includes a woodland trail, natural seating elements with logs and boulders, and native plantings. A courtyard between the north and south classroom wings is designed to enable outdoor learning opportunities and look onto preserved trees and the adjacent existing wetland area.

Spectra Marymoor recently received the 2024 Washington American Society of Landscape Architects (WASLA) Award of Honor in the Residential Design category.

Spectra Marymoor is the first transit-oriented development to emerge from the newly created Marymoor Arts District in Redmond, WA. Located adjacent to the new light rail extension station into Redmond, vibrant existing retail, and great linkages to regional trail systems, the Spectra project serves as a gateway into an increasingly in-demand residential center. Fora designed every inch of the landscape surrounding the building with amenities to enhance the development’s intent as an urban village anchor blurring the line between public and private. Lushly planted courtyards with open air lounges invite residents into the landscape, while the central public promenades encourage community flow and converge at a seating and meeting area with a large sculptural art piece. The design team incorporated multiple community gardens which have promulgated a sense of community with shared stewardship. An early learning center with sensory gardens and interactive playgrounds occupies the site’s southeast corner while garden terraces, vibrantly planted with large trees, and a roof terrace further the reason for families to enthusiastically call this emerging neighborhood home.

Smokey Point Community Park broke ground recently, and Phase 1 is taking shape with the west plaza concrete formwork in progress. Located adjacent two historical sites of interest – Rex’s Corner and the Smokey Point Café for which the local community is named, the park will serve as a community/civic center and will provide 1.8 acres of recreation to the community, with the overarching vision of creating a community space where concerts, vendor fairs, and opportunities for community events can be held and bring the community together. Phase 1 of the project will provide a community plaza space with sculptural art elements, lighting, stage, exercise track and great lawn, parking, and bathrooms. Phase 2 of the project will provide a shelter and playground.

As Earth Day comes to an end (it never really ends for us at Fora if we’re being honest), we’ve been reflecting on all the ways we as landscape architects can be better stewards of the earth. Whether it’s learning how to start conversations with industry partners, assessing our carbon impact, or realigning our values towards climate positive design, we are on it!!

Field Trip Friday! Fora took a trip to Ember Lynnwood to see its progress today, led by Andy and Leo. Located a few blocks from the Lynnwood City Center Light Rail Station opening in the fall, Ember is a mixed-use residential project that will serve as a cornerstone in the growing City Center area. We toured the park-like roof terrace that includes outdoor lounge spaces nestled in sloped green roof mounded with grasses and a winding path that leads to the CLT amenity lounge and fitness center. A large amenity courtyard, retail patio, sport court and midblock trail connections are provided below.

Envisioned as a multicultural hub and neighborhood asset, the Olympic View K-8 project was informed by a series of community meetings to address potential inequities that may affect a sense of belonging, health, wellbeing and learning. Site goals included creating an outdoor community hub that was park-like in nature and accessible to all ages and generations of families, and continuing the school's strong tradition of gardening and outdoor learning. The school opened last fall in 2023.

The Costco Issaquah Headquarters Addition is today's DJC Project of the Week. The new office building opened at its 30-acre Issaquah Headquarters last summer. Sited adjacent to the Issaquah Creek Trail, the campus addition provides connections to the network of trails surrounding the campus and embraces its forested surroundings. Pictured is the auditorium with an outdoor terrace, terraced seating and grove that provides a variety of seating opportunities for the campus and views into the wetland and Issaquah Creek.

While oriented towards quality and innovation, the firm enjoys an excellent record of implementation and cost control. We are realistic and practical about the way we approach projects, and take into account all the factors that make a project successful, including the long-term costs of maintenance and repair, use patterns, safety, and flexibility. In addition to our design and planning capability, we are particularly strong in technical issues and site observation during construction to ensure a well-built project.
