atelierjones

atelierjones atelierjones is an architecture and design firm based in Seattle focusing on creating delight within sustainable, dense urban environments.

atelierjones’ work entwines design, research, and community engagement to create projects of urban reclamation: of sites, buildings, materials, waste, and ways of living. Founded by Susan Jones, FAIA in 2003 the firm seeks projects seek out sites and materials with inherent, but underutilized value - to harvest their embodied energy, their catalytic power for owners and communities, their beauty.

Her work creates delight and wonder in leftover, dirty, forgotten places and spaces, and materials. The firm collects waste materials and collaborates with fabricators and researchers to create projects that reuse materials and create new uses in innovative and beautiful ways. atelierjones has forged this cross-disciplinary approach through embracing methodologies mined from sustainability and materials research, from historic preservation and adaptive reuse movements, real estate development as well as community activism. The firm’s work has been recognized by numerous national, regional and local design awards, and been published nationally and internationally. Susan graduated from Harvard GSD, has taught at the University of Washington since 1991, been a visiting design studio lead and critic at numerous national universities, and is currently an Affiliate Associate Professor of Architecture in the College of the Built Environments, University of Washington. She was nominated to the AIA College of Fellows in 2010. atelierjones would like to thank all the lovely colleagues, friends and consulting design partners and firms that we have collaborated with over the years for their hard work and support. It has been fun to work together!!

a sweet and super thoughtful video arrived from friend and GSD colleague, Rick Peterson, of my exclaiming when our Type IV-B code resolution to expose all Mass Timber ceilings up to 12 stories passed through the ICC committee process back in April…I had just testified and it passed - 9-5! Just like that! Thanks to all those amazing fire tests that we did with RISE in October 2020. Now on to the ICC votes in November 2021! What a year!
