We are excited to be offering classes again! We are starting up two classes, one on leaded stained glass in the morning and copper foiling stained glass in the afternoon on Saturdays for 6 weeks. Details below! Call or email us to reserve your spot as there are only 10 seats for each class.

INTRODUCTION TO LEAD CAME

Instructor: Pino Cherchi

Tuition: $390

Saturdays: 9:30 – 11:30 (6 weeks course)

Start Date: December 18th, 2021

Learn how to build your own stained glass window! Lead came is one of the most used styles in stained glass making, a method used for centuries in churches and residences across the world. Taught by Pino Cherchi, an Italian glass artist, participants will learn to build their own leaded glass windows with instruction. With over 30 years of experience in the industry, Pino will share his skills and knowledge over this 6 sessions course. Participants in this class will learn to cut glass, how to build, solder, and complete a stained glass piece by the end of the course.

Classes will meet Saturday mornings for 6 consecutive weeks. Tools and materials are available for purchase from our stock at affordable prices. Participants who complete this course will leave with a stained-glass panel, tools, and experience to keep making more stained glass!

No experience required

*Closed toe shoes and long pants are required while taking any class at Seattle Stained Glass

COPPER FOIL STAINED GLASS

Instructor: Pino Cherchi

Tuition: $390

Saturdays: 1:00-2:20 (6 weeks course)

Start date: December 18th, 2021

Alternatively, we also offer a copper foil stained-glass course! Also taught by our resident instructor, Pino Cherchi. Copper foiling is a newer technique than traditional leading, and offers a unique opportunity to learn a new skill. Participants will learn to build their own foiled glass windows with instruction. With over 30 years of experience in the industry, Pino will share his skills and knowledge over this 6 sessions course. Participants in this class will learn to cut glass, how to build, solder, and complete a stained glass piece by the end of the course.

Ever wonder what happens when we do a restoration project? Swipe right to see the process. From a broken window to a full restoration.
First, we remove the panel and install temporary covering. Here we used double strength clear glass.
We take a rubbing of the old panel to use as a guide for reassembly. The antique panel is placed in a soak tank to reduce lead dust during disassembly. We then disassemble the antique panel, cleaning the original glass and recycling the old lead.
New glass is cut to replace any damaged or missing glass. Often the old glass is no longer in production, so we match the color and texture using glass that is currently available.
We rebuild the window using new lead that is soldered at each joint. Glazing putty is then brushed into the channel of the lead came, surround and protecting the glass. To prevent the damage from reoccurring, we added steel rebar to increase structural support.
The newly built panel is reinstalled into the opening, to enjoy another 100 years of life.
