"My solar panels will keep my lights on during a power outage."

False.

Grid-tied solar without a battery shuts off during an outage for safety reasons. If backup power during outages matters to you, that's what a battery adds.

"An excellent experience with a contractor. Top-notch work at a reasonable price and a good warranty. Notably, communication and scheduling were perfect. PSS communicated clearly with me and my roofing contractor so that everything (removing old panels, redoing roof, installing new system) happened without any delay, completely on schedule, despite the usual surprises that popped up. I recommend them without hesitation."

Thanks, Mark

If you’ve been putting off a decision on solar, here’s a new reason to stop waiting: the federal government just put a price floor under solar panels, and it kicks in this December.

Net metering is jargony and nuanced – yet it is critically important to investing in solar, contested in solar markets across the world, and very likely changing soon here in Washington. Due to that, we decided to make a quick Q&A-style blog to clear things up for now.

What is net metering?

Net metering is a key benefit of owning a solar system. When you export power back onto the grid, you’re credited at the retail rate for that power. Those credits build up in a virtual bank. In the Pacific Northwest, most systems build up a large bank of credits over the summer, when the sun is abundant and loads are light, then draw that down over the winter. With net metering, many of our customers are able to offset 80%-100% of their annual usage!
