Before summer wrapped up, our two studios took some time to step away, get outside, and reconnect. The San Diego team gathered for a park picnic and games, while our Seattle studio headed to Ocean Shores. A chance to recharge, spend time together, and enjoy the last stretch of summer before diving into the season ahead.

On World Architecture Day, we’re celebrating two Miller Hull projects honored by Metropolis Magazine Planet Positive Awards, which highlight excellence in sustainable, healthy, and just design across the built environment.

The Newhouse Replacement Building received an Innovation Award in Overall Decarbonization for its approach to material reuse, low-carbon mass timber construction, all-electric systems, and healthier materials. Compared to a conventional steel-and-concrete baseline, the project reduces upfront embodied carbon by 52%.

Redmond Library received a Project Award in the Civic category for its role as a welcoming civic living room, with flexible spaces, outdoor gathering areas, and a photovoltaic array sized to meet 100% of the building’s annual energy demand.

Architecture has a role to play in shaping healthier communities and a more resilient planet. We’re proud to see these two projects celebrated for putting that responsibility into practice.

We’re celebrating the ribbon cutting of the Oasis Community Center, a welcoming hub at the heart of UC Irvine’s first-year housing community.

Designed to support gathering, studying, socializing, and simply finding a place to call home, the Oasis creates space for students to connect, recharge, and build community as they begin their campus journey.

Congratulations to our client and project team for bringing this community-focused space to life!

Heading to the CMAA’s 2026 conference in Denver? Join Miller Hull architect Andrew Simes on Monday, October 5, for “Preserving Maritime History Through Sustainable Innovation.”

Andrew will join Kelly Purnell of the Port of Seattle and Nash Johnson of HNTB to discuss the transformation of the 110-year-old Seattle Ship Supply building into the Maritime Innovation Center.

The conversation will explore how adaptive reuse and historic preservation can work alongside major structural upgrades and Living Building Challenge systems for water, energy, materials, and long-term performance, bringing new life to the oldest structure in the Port of Seattle’s real estate portfolio.

Two new fire stations are officially underway in Snohomish County!

Fire Station 32 in Monroe broke ground over the summer, followed by Fire Station 81 in Lake Stevens earlier this month. We’re working with BNBuilders and Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue to deliver both facilities through a progressive design-build partnership.

Both stations are designed around the health, safety, and long-term well-being of the firefighters, staff, and communities they serve, incorporating Healthy-in, Healthy-out design standards and efforts to reduce Red List chemicals in common building products.

We’re excited to see these two new community resources take shape.

Nearly 20 years later, Fisher Pavilion continues to serve as Seattle Center’s living room. Designed as an “anti-building,” the pavilion tucks beneath a public plaza, using the site’s natural grade change to preserve views and create seamless connections between the surrounding buildings and public spaces.

With a flexible, nearly 20-foot-high event space and operable glazed garage doors that open the building to the plaza, Fisher Pavilion adapts to whatever the day brings. We’re excited to see this project continue to play a role in Seattle Center’s community life.

This summer, we welcomed interns Rakib, Nik, and Collin to our Seattle studio, bringing new perspectives, curiosity, and energy to our work.

Our internship program gives students hands-on experience across projects and opportunities to learn from people throughout the studio. We’re grateful for all they contributed, and for the ideas and experiences they’re taking with them into the next year of their architectural education and careers.

Click through for some of their favorite moments and takeaways from the summer.

We're excited to be included in The Seattle Times’ Pacific NW Magazine’s latest feature, “The Return of Wood,” which explores the growing movement around mass timber in the Pacific Northwest and highlights several of our projects, including the Bullitt Center here in Seattle, Matt’s Place 2.0 in Spokane, the Newhouse Replacement Building in Olympia, and our regional libraries in Deschutes County, Oregon.

Miller Hull Principal John MacKay and architect Alex Zink spoke with writer Lauren Gallow about the potential of mass timber, from using wood in its most natural form to supporting regional manufacturing and forest-based economies.

Thank you, Lauren Gallow and The Seattle Times, for the story! Click to read: https://www.seattletimes.com/pacific-nw-magazine/ecological-mass-timber-may-very-well-be-the-future-of-architecture/
