This is what goes between your weather barrier and your siding — and most homeowners never know it exists.

HydroGap drainage mat creates a small but critical gap between the weather barrier and the cladding on this Bellevue home. That gap does two things: it lets any water that gets behind the siding drain out instead of sitting against the wall, and it allows the wall assembly to dry after rain.

No visible frame break. No gap in the reveal. No compromise in the pattern. Just a seamless exterior that happens to open.

This level of detail requires careful planning before a single board goes up — the door framing, the reveal depth, the corner sequencing all have to be right from the start. You can't fake it at the end.

Summer isn't over yet — and this is exactly the kind of project that makes the most of what's left of it.

This Bellevue home got a full deck rebuild as part of a larger interior and exterior renovation. New composite decking, fresh railings, and a picture frame stair detail that takes a straightforward build to the next level.

This is what years of water intrusion looks like up close.

Completely deteriorated framing, crumbling wood fiber, rust, black moisture staining. By the time damage reaches this stage it's been developing behind the exterior for years — invisible from the outside until something forces you to open the wall.

This is one of the most common things we find on Seattle homes. Water finds a gap — at a window, a transition, a failed flashing detail — and gets in. It has nowhere to go. Over time the framing breaks down exactly like this.

The frustrating part: the exterior often looks fine right up until the moment you start pulling things apart.

Clean lines don't happen by accident.

This corner on a Lake Washington waterfront build shows what precision exterior work actually looks like — dark horizontal cladding wrapping the corner without a single course out of alignment, standing seam metal roof integration sitting flush at the roofline, and a finished edge that looks like it couldn't have been any other way.

This is the result of every decision made correctly before the first piece of cladding went on — the framing, the air barrier, the insulation sequencing, the attachment details. When the foundation is right, the finish looks like this.

High-end waterfront homes in the Pacific Northwest demand this level of ex*****on. The weather doesn't forgive shortcuts, and neither do our clients.

This is the kind of detail that defines the difference between a good exterior and a great one.

This is the kind of detail most people would never notice — which is exactly the point.

That white panel on the right is a door being fitted to match the horizontal siding depth on the surrounding wall. The goal: when it's done, the door surround reads as a seamless part of the facade rather than something bolted onto it.

Our crew spent time at a recent management meeting walking through exactly how they're calibrating the depth to achieve that match on this Lake Washington waterfront build. Getting it right requires precision at every course — because even a few millimeters off throws the whole plane.

Nobody sees the work that goes into making something look effortless. That's what craftsmanship actually is.
