It’s been almost exactly a year since my last post. A lot has happened since then, mainly the birth of a first child, Theodore. While he has become a major priority in my life, I am grateful that I could continue to find way’s to grow as a designer and business owner during this exciting shift.

Here you will see maybe my most favorite (non human 😉) creation to date. A Japanese inspired urban garden with a Corten planter lined deck, poured concrete pavers, Black forest inspired fencing and many large granite boulders. I love how the oversized boulders seem to set the tone for every space. I like boulders best when a garden appears to be built around them not with them, as if they were there long before the house and garden ever were. Any space that feels like it’s was built with and for its exact place in the world will always shine brightest. No need for bright colorful flowers or overwhelming contrast here.

A favorite from this last year. I love to take a sharp modern hardscape layout and soften it with airy plant material and textures. The Techo-Block Borealis pavers really make this whole space pop.

One way to simply define the Japanese Garden is a re creation of the natural word in its most perfected form. Here is my take on one with a Corten wall to help tie it into the the surrounding modern architecture.

So glad to see this drought tolerant garden start to thrive. It is designed on a southwest facing slope which just cooks on hot summer days. The client wanted a front yard garden that both them and their toddler could enjoy. These large Columbia basalt boulders from eastern Washington are perfect for climbing and sitting. They also fit in quite well with the arid Mediterranean plant selection.

I would be lying if I said that these two flights of concrete steps with bluestone treads were a piece of cake… This pathway that guides my client too their front door took me on a separate journey full of many lessons learned. The great part is that they look fantastic and I can’t wait to incorporate this kind of work into more classical style designs.

The true urban oasis resides on the roof!!! IPE wood tiles, corten planters and some string lights really made all the difference here. Thanks so much to and for being such fantastic clients!

Believe it or not, this little patio space was designed mostly for the clients dogs... Who said dogs can’t have nice bathrooms too? The slightly larger patio on the brighter side of the home is for the humans. 🐶 @ Capitol Hill (Seattle)

While the world crumbles, rest assured that these permeable pavers that we just installed will continue to reduce runoff no matter what. While they may look normal, these pavers create a porous paving surface allowing rain water/pollution to percolate through them and back into the ground, instead of running over/off and into our waterways. @ Madison Valley, Seattle
