No single organization, land manager, engineer, or manufacturer has all the answers. The best solutions come from sharing experiences, asking questions, and learning from one another.

That’s why we’re excited to launch the North American Waterless Waste Solutions Forum—a new online community for people planning, managing, researching, and operating waterless human waste systems.

What happens when one of Oregon’s most popular outdoor destinations needs a restroom that can handle hundreds of visitors—without hauling thousands of pounds of waste each year?

At Smith Rock State Park, Toilet Tech’s Behind-the-Wall Urine-Diverting Decompose system provides a long-term sanitation solution designed for high-use recreation areas. By separating urine from solids at the source and supporting natural onsite decomposition, the system has eliminated the removal of 30,000–40,000 pounds of hazardous waste over the past five years while serving 50–200+ visitors each day. It’s a practical example of how innovative sanitation can reduce maintenance, protect natural landscapes, and improve the visitor experience in the places we love to explore.

Thank you to everyone who joined our May webinar on waterless, urine-diverting toilet systems in remote recreation settings!

We heard from Tara Vessella of Rocky Mountain National Park, Geoff Hill of Toilet Tech, Andre Fortin of Friends of Tilly Jane Cabins, and Emmanuel from Ecodomeo, who shared insights on operating waterless sanitation systems in alpine, remote, and freezing environments.

The session concluded with a great Q&A focused on lessons learned, maintenance practices, and best practices for managing sanitation infrastructure in challenging terrain.
