This past weekend, Mahlum joined Seattle Indian Health Board (SIHB) for their Spirit Walk & Warrior Run šŸƒā€ā™‚ļø

Since 1995, Spirit Walk has provided an opportunity for Native people and organizations to gather. We’re grateful to have been part of a community gathering that promotes healthy futures for Native youth and raises awareness around Native health.

For 25 years, we’ve taken an afternoon each fall to play a golf with our consultants and friends in the A&E community—all while raising money for a local nonprofit.

This year, we’re proud to have donated $8,000 to Growing Gardens, a Portland based nonprofit using the expertise of growing food in schools, backyards, and correctional facilities to cultivate healthy and equitable communities.

Thanks to everyone who came out and to our sponsors who helped make it possible: AllegionUS | Door Hardware | Security | Access | Safety, Arris Studio Architects, CAPITAL Engineering, Stantec, ZCS, KPFF Portland + Eugene, PAE, Samata Engineers, Fortis Construction, Mutual Materials, NIS + Systems West, catena engineers, Degenkolb Engineers, Glumac, Walsh Construction Co., Skanska USA | Construction & Development, and Precision Images

MASS TIMBER CONFERENCE
Last week we attended the Hawaii Mass Timber Conference hosted by WoodWorks, The American Institute of Architects, and the Hawaii Carpenters Union. Joe Mayo (Mahlum Architects) presented alongside Aaron Rhodes (TimberQuestTM) and David Sellers (Hawaii Off Grid-HIOG), sharing implementation strategies for mass timber technologies from CLT to DLT (a national first in the K12 space) and demonstrated the numerous benefits of utilizing mass timber. The benefits range from expedited construction duration, health and happiness of trades, biophilic impacts to the building occupants, embodied carbon reduction and enhanced seismic performance. Special thanks to Governor Josh Green (), Edmund Aczon (Edmund Aczon) and Erool Kusunoki (Errol Kusunoki) for such a great event!

UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI’I, MĀNOA
As part of the housing master planning process at University of Hawai’i, Mānoa (University of Hawaii at Manoa) with co-collaborators, Brailsford&Dunlavey, Catharine Killien and Kurt Haapala (Mahlum Architects) facilitated student engagement to solicit feedback on ways to improve the dining and residential experience for students. Students and faculty shared a desire for modernizing the dining experience as well as ways to deepen community connections, especially to enhance outdoor community experiences.

A new vertical connection is taking shape at University of Washington's Haggett Hall!

Rising 30 feet from the courtyard to the Mid-Slope Path, this 8-foot-wide exterior steel stair will support movement from East Campus to North Campus housing through the newly formed courtyard.

Its scale is substantial, with the precast treads alone weigh a combined 42,000 pounds. The design intent is simple: make a steep change in grade feel direct, open, and integrated into the larger pedestrian network and connect to the views of Lake Washington beyond.

Members of the Mahlum, TenBerke, and Andersen Construction teams were on site last week reviewing the guardrail detailing of this important campus connector.

With the end of summer upon us, we'd like to celebrate this season's cohort of interns that joined us at our Seattle and Portland offices.

A current University of Washington Masters of Architecture candidate, Joi Porter, joined us in Seattle. In Portland, we hosted Karina Soltero, a graduate of University of Oregon, who is entering into the 2026 Masters of Architecture program at University of Washington.

Jumping into projects (and more importantly, co****le tournaments!) with their creativity and dedication, these students quickly became an integral part of our teams.

We wish them well in the next chapter of their career journeys.

A big milestone for the new Louisa May Alcott Elementary School! Last week, the project team celebrated the topping out of the new school as the final piece of structural steel was lifted into place.

Before the beam was installed, it was left out at the school’s open house for students, teachers, and staff to sign. It also picked up an unexpected addition: a drawing of Jimothy, Seattle’s beloved raccoon mascot. The steel erectors spotted it while installing the beam and got a good laugh out of it.

We’re looking forward to seeing the rest of the building come together and, most importantly, welcoming Alcott students into their new school next fall.

Last week, we celebrated the opening of the new Alki Elementary School with Seattle Public Schools and the Alki community!

The new 89,000 SF Alki Elementary School demonstrates how integrated design can reduce carbon without compromise. Every decision, from the mass timber structure to the geothermal system and high-performance envelope, supports student well-being while lowering the building’s lifetime carbon impact.

Designed around a vision of care, support, and belonging, the new school creates opportunities for students to learn and connect throughout the building. Learning communities are organized into neighborhoods across three floors, with shared commons and small-group spaces that support collaboration, different ways of learning, and connection to the surrounding neighborhood.

Welcome to your new school, Seagulls!
