🦋 Painted Lady Butterfly - They overwinter in CA & Mexico. Who wouldn’t want to snowbird during WA winters?

🦋 Cabbage White Butterfly - commonly a pest in edible gardens but they love your pollinator patch more!

Say hello to Douglas Aster!
(Symphyotrichon subspicatum)

One of our favorites from our upcoming pollinator garden kits is currently blooming now - October! This fast growing herbaceous perennial is loved by humans and is frequently visited by pollinators looking for late-season nectar sources. Some notable pollinators that love Douglas Aster flowers are Skipper & Painted Lady Butterflies.

We encourage clients to wait to cut back the foliage until spring because when the flowers go to seed and are left over the winter, they become a reliable source of food for birds!!

When in full bloom and naturalized they create beautiful swaths of lavender purple in your garden 💜

Rain gardens are a must in the PNW! So let’s talk about it.

Are you also a little scared of what fall and winter is going to look like after our summer drought? Do you also want to know how you can help prevent pollution & flooding into our local bodies of water like Lake Washington & the Puget Sound?

I thought so.

Dry ground 🌵 + heavy rainfall 🌧️ = flooding 💦 This leads to overflowing storm drains and pollution entering our local bodies of water 🌊

How can we prevent this?

You can start by capturing & managing your storm water runoff with a rain garden or cistern. The goal is to slow the flow and you also capture free water for use during the summer! Water your garden beds and build a beautiful habitat that attracts a whole different set of pollinators 🦋

Since we’re on the topic, we should officially announcing that Garden in A Box #2 is going to be a Rain Garden Box!

Hardscape Highlight 🪨

Steel steps, with gravel and cowboy coffee flagstone. Once a slope with no intention of use, is now a beautiful entry way for guests and delivery people.

A signature for us is rockery lined paths with logs. Doing this creates nooks and crannies for critters and bugs to live as well as plants to grow.

A crevice garden allows for slope control and lots of unique small rockery plants acquired by the home owner! A variety of Lewisia species, like Siskiyou and Columbia Lewisia’s!

Dry stack wolf creek stone retains the surrounding flagstone patio. Mixing different types of stone creates varying texture, size and shapes, which also creates a fun and unexpected landscape.
