What are some main reasons why you have to jiggle the key in the keyhole of the lock when putting the key in to open or unlock your door?

If you have to jiggle your key in the keyhole to unlock your door, it usually means something inside the lock or the key itself is worn, dirty, misaligned, or not moving properly. As a locksmith, these are some of the most common reasons homeowners experience this problem.
7 common reasons you have to jiggle your key
1. A worn-out key
Over time, the cuts on a key wear down. The key may no longer lift the lock's internal pins to the correct positions, so you have to jiggle it to get the lock to turn.
2. Worn or damaged lock pins
The pins inside the lock cylinder can wear out, stick, or become damaged. This can prevent the key from turning smoothly, even when you're using the correct key.
3. Dirt and debris inside the lock
Dust, grime, and other contaminants can interfere with the lock's internal components, making it difficult for the key to slide in or turn.
4. Door or deadbolt misalignment
If the door has shifted, sagged, or is pressing against the door frame, the deadbolt may bind. You might need to push or pull the door while turning the key.
5. A bent or damaged key
A slightly bent key, damaged key tip, or poorly duplicated key may not enter the cylinder or engage the pins correctly.
6. A failing lock cylinder
Internal parts can wear down with years of use. If the key sticks, catches, or turns inconsistently, the cylinder may need professional servicing or replacement.
7. Corrosion or lack of proper lubrication
Moisture and corrosion can cause internal parts to stick. Using the wrong lubricant can also attract dirt and make the problem worse.
What should you do if your key keeps sticking?
• Try a spare key.If it works smoothly, your everyday key may be worn or damaged.
• Check the door alignment. If the key turns more easily when you push or pull the door, the deadbolt may be binding against the strike plate.
• Use a lock-specific lubricant.Follow the lock manufacturer's recommendations; avoid heavy oils that can collect debris.
