Even on a day off, a surveyor finds something survey-related! 🥾🧭

While hiking Mount Cardigan yesterday, I spotted this survey disc set into the granite at the summit—a small piece of surveying history with a big purpose.

You can find survey marks on mountaintops, along roads, and in other stable locations across the country. Mountain summits were especially useful for early surveys because they offered clear sightlines between distant stations.

Different marks serve different purposes: some establish horizontal positions, while benchmarks provide elevation references. Together, survey control helps support accurate mapping, engineering, and construction.

This particular disc is labeled “REFERENCE MARK.” Its arrow points toward the main survey station, helping surveyors locate and verify that station’s position.

If you come across one, take a photo and leave it undisturbed. These small markers preserve valuable connections between past surveys and future measurements.
