Asphalt is used to pave cattle feed lots, poultry house floors, barn floors, and greenhouse floors. It is also used to line surfaces in fish hatcheries and industrial retention ponds, lay railbeds for transit systems, and create sea walls, dikes, and groins to control beach erosion.

For many years, builders imported asphalt from Europe, but in 1875, Edmund DeSmedt paved Pennsylvania Avenue at the behest of President Grant. DeSmedt used natural sheets of asphalt from the Trinidad Asphalt Lake, proving asphalt from the Americas was as durable as that from Europe.

If the finished edges of your asphalt surface are higher than the surrounding lawn, then it’s recommended that you backfill it (build up the sides with black dirt). This will ensure the proper side support and protect the asphalt edge from cracking.

Derived from the Latin, gregare, to herd, “aggregate” describes collected materials. In our industry, aggregate refers to the sand or gravel added to cement to make concrete and mortar, or the sand and gravel added to asphalt to make what is known as “asphalt cement.”
