Echoes Embrace
Phoenix, Arizona

Set against the rugged desert hillside near Echo Canyon, Echoes Embrace explores the relationship between shelter and openness. Grounded walls extend from the rocky terrain, while a broad, wood-lined roof reaches outward, framing the landscape and gathering the spaces beneath it.

In the kitchen at Borrowed Sky, 11-foot-tall windows frame the rugged mountainside, bringing its boulders, textures, and desert vegetation into the experience of the home. Architecture and landscape intertwine, creating an intimate connection to the hillside.

In the opposite direction, the home opens toward expansive valley and mountain views, with the pool and outdoor entertaining spaces.

Water’s edge. At our Barrowed Sky residence, water extends to the edge of the terrace, creating a mirror of the horizon. The pool captures the changing desert sky, softening the boundary between architecture and landscape and drawing the eye toward the mountains beyond.

Our Barrowed Sky residence unfolds through movement, a story revealed one space, one threshold, one discovery at a time.

Expansive views draw the eye toward the horizon, while intimate courtyards bring attention back to the textures of the desert. Elsewhere, a floating acrylic pool invites a pause, its apparent weightlessness shifting our perception of water, light, and the space beneath.

Each space carries its own atmosphere. Moving between enclosure and openness, shadow and light, the experience deepens as the home reveals itself.

We design for these moments and the connections between them, for architecture that engages the senses, invites discovery, and leaves a feeling that stays with you.

Twilight at Borrowed Sky.

Viewed from below, the home glows softly as it emerges from the mountain. Cast concrete walls extend from the landscape, anchoring a delicate glass enclosure beneath a floating Douglas fir ceiling. Within, openings carved into the roof frame the sky and draw the landscape inward, bringing architecture, light, and nature into one continuous experience.

Our Crescent Ridge project is nearing completion! Wood ceilings are going in, drywall is being finished, and metal fascia is being installed. It’s exciting to see the materials and details come together as the home enters its final stages.

Endless views at our Borrowed Sky Residence. At the main level, the pool meets the terrace, reflecting the changing sky as water slips over its negative edge. From the seating area, that ribbon of water draws your eye outward across the desert to the mountains beyond. A place to settle in and watch the last light move across the hillside.

Perched along the hillside, Borrowed Sky began with a simple idea: a long, linear plan stretched across the site. That line was then pulled apart, creating openings where landscape, light, and sky could move through the architecture.

From the exterior, the house still reads as a strong horizontal line across the hill. But as you move through it, that line begins to break down. Courtyards appear unexpectedly between rooms, interrupting the interior with moments of landscape and changing the way you experience the house throughout the day.

At the center, the architecture cuts into the hillside to form a protected courtyard. Here, an acrylic pool reaches across the opening and appears to float above the desert. Looking through the water, the view continues beyond, while the hillside seems to pass beneath the pool and into the house.
