By late August, a lot of the flashier annuals are looking tired. Black-eyed Susans could not care less. They've been blooming through the worst of the heat since June and they'll keep going into fall, which is exactly why we love working them into a bed.

Low maintenance, high payoff, and they carry a garden through the toughest stretch of summer.

Labor Day is a right around the corner now, which makes this a good weekend to give the outdoor kitchen a little attention before the crowd shows up. Wipe down the counters, restock the firewood, check the grill.

Twenty minutes of upkeep now means you get to actually enjoy the party instead of running around fixing things mid-cookout.

If you can believe it, fall is the best time to plant trees and shrubs in Georgia and here's why:

The soil is still warm enough to push root growth while the air finally starts to cool off, so a new plant settles in instead of just surviving the heat. If a layered bed like this one is on your list for the yard, late August is when we start those conversations so the design is ready to go in the ground once fall gets here.

It feels right that Pam Dooley's birthday falls on Relaxation Day. She works so hard, and she deserves a birthday spent doing exactly what she loves, starting with a ride with her pup, Oakley (and her wife, Michelle, usually right behind the camera).

Happy birthday, Pam! Thanks for all you do for this team.

By this point in August, it is sweltering or raining from noon to six. This is the hour that makes up for it.

The pool lighting and landscape lighting take over, the heat finally breaks a little, and the whole space feels like a different property than it did three hours earlier.

Hot and dry, then an afternoon storm dumps an inch in twenty minutes. That's the pattern lately, and it's exactly the kind of stretch that trips up a lawn on a fixed watering schedule

A smart system skips the day after it just rained instead of running anyway, which matters more than people think this time of year.

Setting up a Husqvarna Automower on a property this week. With storms rolling through metro Atlanta most afternoons right now, it's tough to find a dry window to mow. This thing doesn't need one. It runs on battery, cutting a little bit almost every day, rain or shine, so the grass never gets away from you between storms.

If the last couple weeks were a sprint of school supply lists, first day photos, and forms that all needed signing by yesterday, you've earned this. Decatur and DeKalb schools are back in session now, and this feels like a good week to slow down for twenty minutes. Shade, a good book, and (hopefully) nowhere to be.

Leaving town this summer? Your irrigation system is one of the most important thing to check before you go on vacation.

Run every zone manually and walk with it (or get us to do it!). You're looking for:
→ Heads that aren't popping up or are spraying sideways
→ Zones that cut off too quickly
→ Any dry patches or soft spots in the lawn

If you have a smart controller, make sure it's set to Auto-Adjust — not a fixed timer. It'll read Atlanta's weather while you're away and adjust accordingly. If there's a drought, it waters more. If it rains all week, it backs off.
