A small drip at a gutter joint is easy to overlook, but water can work its way behind the gutter and contribute to fascia rot.

Aluminum gutters expand and contract as Upstate NY temperatures change. Over time, that movement can loosen sealant at miters and joints. A joint can often be re-sealed, but if it keeps leaking in the same spot, the section may be past patching.

Seamless gutters reduce the number of joints since each run is formed on-site in one piece, with seams at corners and downspout outlets.

July 2026 was a reminder of what gutters are up against. Albany logged 5.45 inches of rain in a single day. The second-wettest day ever recorded there. Schodack picked up 11.8 inches over three days, and basements flooded around the region.

That much rain in a few hours is the real test of a gutter system. When gutters are clogged, undersized, or pulling away, roof water lands right against the foundation instead of being carried clear.

Worth checking your gutters before the next heavy rain.

Before the freeze sets in, make sure your gutters are clear.

Wet leaves and debris can trap water in the gutter. When that water freezes, it adds weight to the hangers and fascia. Freeze-thaw cycles can also stress seams and end caps, while meltwater with nowhere to drain may refreeze at the roof edge.

Cleaning before the freeze is the last easy window to help keep your system draining through winter. Need a hand? All Things Gutter provides gutter cleaning across Upstate NY.

Ice dams don’t start in the gutter. They usually begin when heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the roof. That water runs toward the colder eaves and can refreeze there.

Clogged gutters don’t cause the dam, but debris can slow or hold meltwater at the roof edge and add to refreezing. Keeping gutters and downspouts clear helps water drain, though it won’t fix the attic heat-loss behind an ice dam.

Before the first freeze, check your gutters, and if ice dams have been a problem, have your attic insulation and ventilation checked too.

Where the water lands matters. Older homes are common around Upstate NY, and many were built before modern drainage practices were widespread.

When a downspout sends water right beside the foundation, it can pool and keep the soil saturated. Ongoing moisture, along with freeze-thaw cycles, can put added stress on foundations and contribute to basement moisture. Foundation repairs can be a major expense, and directing roof runoff away from the house is one practical step homeowners can take.

Downspout extensions, splash blocks, and grading that slopes away from the foundation can help move water away from the wall. Not sure where yours is draining? We offer free estimates.

Ice dams start with heat escaping from the house into the attic, not with the gutters.

That heat warms the roof, snow melts and the water can refreeze at the colder roof edge. Clogged gutters can hold up that meltwater and add to the trouble, but cleaning alone won’t stop ice dams or fix attic heat loss.

What a gutter cleaning before the freeze does help with: clearing leaves and debris, flushing downspouts, and making sure the system can drain freely. It’s worthwhile prep, just not an ice-dam cure.

Most homeowners wait until something breaks before dealing with a gutter problem. But a small issue can give water time to damage fascia or siding, or drain where it shouldn’t around the foundation.

If you’ve noticed a leak, a sagging section, or water spilling over, it’s worth having it looked at early. A small gutter repair now is usually simpler than fixing damage elsewhere later. We’ll give you an honest recommendation on whether a repair or replacement makes sense.

Getting a new roof? It’s a good time to check the gutters, too.

When roof work opens up the eaves, the fascia is exposed and crews are already on site. If the gutters are aging or need replacement, coordinating the work can avoid bringing a gutter crew back for a separate visit later.

Old gutters can hide fascia damage. And when a gutter run is sagging, rotted fascia may be part of the problem, so it’s worth checking what’s behind the gutter before putting a new one up.

A 1,500 sq. ft. roof sheds roughly 935 gallons of water for every inch of rain. Split evenly across four downspouts, that’s about 230 gallons through each one over the course of that rainfall.

That’s why one sagging or clogged gutter run can matter more than it looks. The gutter has to carry the flow, and the downspouts need to keep up, especially during heavy rain and snowmelt here in Upstate NY.

Repair or replace? Here’s a simple Rule of Three to think about.

Your gutter system may be moving beyond patching when you’re seeing:

• Three or more active leaks
• Three or more sagging sections
• Repairs to the same area repeatedly over roughly three years

This isn’t a hard rule or a guarantee. Gutter condition, attachment points, fascia, and drainage layout all matter. Sometimes a repair is the right answer. Sometimes replacement is the more practical option.

If you’re not sure, have the system looked over before spending money on another temporary fix.
