Founded in 2011, and inspired by years of experience in the coastal area of the southeastern United States, C. Tharpe Engineering, LLC provides innovative, practical solutions for a wide range of commercial, industrial, and residential projects. We are located in Savannah, Georgia, just minutes from the Atlantic Ocean and 125 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina, an area of highly concentrated seismic potential. These geographic features create a unique and challenging environment in which to practice structural engineering. Having dealt with the challenges of seismic and wind engineering for more than 6 years in this area, our firm has the knowledge and experience necessary to provide our clients with safe, cost-effective, and constructable designs that will withstand all environmental constraints. We have extensive experience in the design of buildings utilizing structural steel, reinforced concrete, concrete masonry, cold-formed steel, precast concrete, insulating concrete form systems, and timber. In addition to our design capabilities, our firm has extensive experience in the assessment and structural evaluation of existing structures, many of which in our area are more than 200 years old. We are proud to have been involved with many of the area’s most notable adaptive reuse projects and historic preservation efforts.

Three things are true of Philadelphia: it really is always sunny, it really is the city of brotherly love and they really know how to show us a good time. Last week our very own J.T. Kowalchuk and Georgia Brown attended the Mass Timber Conference set in downtown Philadelphia.

As mass timber continues to shape the future of sustainable design and construction, staying at the forefront of innovation is more important than ever. The conference provided a valuable opportunity to explore emerging technologies, industry trends, and innovative approaches to mass timber construction.

J.T. and Georgia toured mass timber projects throughout the city, met some incredible innovators in the industry, like Spec Toolbox CEO Adam Jones, and even one of the founding fathers, Ben Franklin. We are thrilled to have had great representation at the event and look forward to utilizing what was learned on our own mass timber projects here in Savannah like the Sabal House Hotel!

Bringing History Back to Life.

Progress continues at the historic Cotton Sail Hotel on Savannah’s River Street. Originally built in 1820 as a brick warehouse, the building has served a variety of purposes throughout Savannah’s history, including as a cotton warehouse, coal storage facility, and import/export facility.

Tharpe Engineering Group is providing structural engineering for the renovation, helping preserve the character of this historic building while supporting its next chapter.

Now complete, 916 MLK provides high-quality, affordable housing for Savannah families, with three residential buildings organized around a shared courtyard designed to foster connection and community.

From Savannah history to its next chapter.

The Queensborough National Bank & Trust Co., located at 322 East Broughton Street, has long been part of Savannah’s historic landscape. As plans move forward for a new location nearby, the project offers an opportunity to carry that legacy forward while creating a new space for the bank and its community.

Tharpe Engineering Group is providing structural engineering for the new facility, working alongside Kevin Rose of Rose Architects and West Construction Company.

Then. Now. Next.

Progress continues at one of Savannah’s most recognizable historic buildings. The Manger Building, originally completed in 1913 as the Savannah Hotel, is being transformed into Recess Hotel & Club, giving this historic landmark a new chapter in downtown Savannah.

These images capture the building’s original character, its current progress, and the vision for its future.

Tharpe Engineering Group is providing structural engineering for the project, working alongside LS3P ASSOCIATES LTD. and Choate Construction Company to help bring this historic renovation to life.

We’re looking forward to seeing the vision become reality.

Modern commercial projects demand more than functionality. They require thoughtful engineering that supports both performance and design.

Tharpe Engineering Group was proud to provide structural engineering services for Audi Hilton Head, a 26,000 SF state-of-the-art addition to the Peacock Auto Mall in Hardeeville, SC. The structure features conventional structural steel with long-span trusses spanning the showroom and service areas, creating the open, modern spaces that define the Audi brand experience.

The project also presented unique geotechnical challenges; poor soil conditions required an auger cast pile and cast-in-place concrete grade beam foundation to mitigate the effects of liquefaction during a seismic event.

We're grateful to have partnered with an incredible project team to help bring this vision to life.
