I do not know what to say or how to feel sometimes about what it is that we do. Just to be able to come behind some of the most brilliant home builders and true craftspeople and replicate their work means so much to me. We are currently working on the Owens-Thomas House museum and Elizabeth's on 37th and in both cases simply restoring beautiful architecture as to the day they were built. It was an honor to stand there today below the ceiling that was painted so many years ago under the conditions present in those times. I can only hope that the people originally involved with either project could appreciate that those skills are still present to this day.

Plaster, priming, fences, and starting an easy drywall paint job. We are spraying the ceilings and trim and then rolling out the walls. It is so much faster/better with spraying.

We are about to do a lot of ceiling plaster repair and I guess, subliminally, I thought of the Sistine Chapel. It is similar in a way in working on such old houses and buildings and such an honor to be able to let the artist in you work and to be standing in the same spot as when someone else created this beautiful thing and now it is your turn to restore it. I have no doubts in our ability to achieve perfection, rather it is just a matter of the passage of time.

Sunday and some of the guys were still working and making custom cabinet doors. I was remembering more about being a DJ when I was younger. I worked at this one club when I was just 18 and it was back when Comedy Central first started and all the headliners would play my club because it was on the circuit between Chicago and the Twin Cities. I got to meet many 90's legends like Jonathan Katz, Bobcat, and Louie Anderson. Many others of course. Now I paint and we do custom cabinetry I guess.

Custom cabinetry and this fence is finished and ready to stain.

Things that are different about this fence build:

There is no ground contact between wood and soil. This prevents wicking and makes the fence last years longer.

There are waterproofing wraps around each fence post BEFORE the concrete is poured... same idea as above.

The boards are all placed together. This makes the privacy better, it was half the labor, and half the material cost.

The gates are all reinforced with an anti-sag kit which consists of a series of brackets which reinforce the gate itself but also the hinge because there is an extra bracket for each hinge. The kit included a latch with a metal wire pull string so you can unlock the gate from the opposite side by just pulling the wire.

We used zinc plated exterior pocket hole screws for the areas needing screws. This is a special weather resistant and rust resistant coating to again add years to the life of this fence.

We will then coat the fence with stain to ensure a lifespan of around 10 years before it needs another coat.

All of the equipment and materials were special ordered from Guerry Lumber or ordered online. The gate supports were $62 for a pair. We repaired our adjoining fence and built a total of 4 gates, 2 for our house and 2 for our neighbor. We are using Benjamin Moore Woodluxe solid stain in PPG 's Superstition color. Our neighbor is still deciding on her color. We used a test to ensure the wood had aged enough to be ready to be stained. We are sanding down and using some wood filler as needed prior to staining. It was a tough job. Everything is leveled correctly and square. 800 pounds of concrete.
