Giant white flowers, burgundy foliage, native swamp species, giant bulbs — and a grasshopper that absolutely loves eating them. 🌿🌸
Our newest Featured Plant article is all about Crinum lilies.
We take a closer look at Giant Crinum, Queen Emma Crinum, Florida’s native Swamp Lily, other Crinum species and hybrids, mature size, landscape placement, eastern lubber grasshoppers, leaf spotting, beneficial green lacewing eggs, and the fruit and offsets that help Crinums reproduce.
We also included several of our own Sarasota-area photos from landscapes we’ve worked with.
One detail we’ve noticed in the field: Queen Emma tends to show much stronger burgundy and purple-red foliage with more sunlight. In shadier locations, the leaves can become considerably greener.
Crinums can be incredibly long-lived landscape plants when they’re given enough room and planted in the right conditions.
