Let’s talk foundations. They are the lowest level and base of support, responsible for transferring the structure’s weight to the ground. They also provide moisture and erosion protection and are the key component in every building’s overall lifespan. The three most commonly used in Florida are; monolithic footings, stemwalls, and grade beams. Mono footings are most commonly used when the existing grade is relatively close to the same height as the slab and allows the footings and slab to be poured as one, hence the name monolithic. Stemwalls are often used when the slab is elevated and requires a footer to be poured 1st and then block is laid to the specific height of the slab which is then backfilled with dirt before pouring the slab. Grade Beams are used when the site is unstable and can not be properly compacted to support the weight of the building (often along the water), they require concrete pilings driven often 10’ to 20’ deep in the soil and then a beam is placed on top of the pilings independently supporting the structure above. Here are some of our recent projects demonstrating all three styles.
