TRUE! Stephen King has had a long connection to the Sarasota area, specifically Casey Key in Nokomis, just south of Sarasota. He and his wife first spent several winters renting a secluded home on Longboat Key in the late 1990s. In 2001, they purchased a waterfront home on Casey Key, where they continue to spend a significant amount of time.

Although Duma Key itself is fictional, it's widely understood to be inspired by the barrier islands around Sarasota—especially Casey Key, with elements of Longboat Key mixed in. King intentionally altered the geography for the story, but locals immediately recognize the setting.
