Keeper of the Flame: As the Last Living Member of the Sarasota School of Architecture, CARL ABBOTT Continues to be a Standard-Bearer Regional Modernism

Carl Abbott is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and is regularly lauded for his accomplishments, with honors that include a Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Florida’s School of Architecture and an AIA Florida Presidential Award. He was also recently invited to send his life’s work to the University of Florida Architectural Archives.

“It brings back so many memories,” Abbott says of the process. “I have always hoped my buildings would be recognized, but I didn’t expect I would receive so much attention myself.”

At 89, Carl Abbott heads his own architecture studio in Sarasota, where he’s lived and worked since 1966, and continues to keep the Sarasota School of Architecture flame alive.
