If I were building this basement again, I wouldn’t approach it any differently than the main level.

The biggest mistake isn’t how a basement is finished… it’s how it’s planned.

When layout, finishes, and lighting are all considered from the beginning, the space becomes something people actually use and enjoy.

It stops feeling separate, and starts feeling like a natural extension of the home.

That’s what turns a basement into something that truly adds value.

The hardest part for me, and believe me/ this is KILLING ME, the basement is currently cuter & more planned out behosively than the upstairs.

What is up with that?

What makes a home like this work isn’t just how it looks, but how it’s been thought through.

The layout is clear and intentional, with a natural connection between the kitchen, dining, and gathering spaces. The indoor-outdoor relationship is strong, allowing the backyard to become an extension of the home rather than an afterthought. Even the simplicity of the plan plays a role, giving it flexibility across different stages of life.

But beyond the technical side, there’s a feeling to it.

It’s the kind of home that supports both the ordinary and the meaningful. A place where spaces are used the way they were intended, where movement feels easy, and where nothing has to be forced to work.

This is what thoughtful design looks like.
Not overdone, just well considered.

And that’s what holds value over time.

What makes a basement feel like part of the home?

It’s usually not one big thing.

It’s the small decisions that either connect the space… or separate it.

When finishes, lighting, and flooring all feel consistent, the basement stops feeling like an afterthought.

And starts feeling like a true extension of the home.

That- and long-term value, are always the goal.

I’ll go first

I felt like our very first house was ours.

It was so cute.

Wrap around porch, giant maple trees, huge yard, casement windows beside every massive picture frame window, stunning glass front doors (all three!), built-in kitchen glass cabinets, original hardwood, the list goes on

I thought maybe $20k in repairs- MAX.

after all, paint couldn’t cost that much and that’s pretty much all it needs…

😆

But we didn’t have a tool- or any construction experience to our names

Then we found out that someone dug underneath the foundation and a single 2x4 was holding up our living room and that portion of the house

We did have a structural engineer check out the home during inspections but that didn’t seem to be a huge concern, we just figured we would fix it soon.

And the smells, the puddles from water damage, the rotted out bottom cabinets and everything jimmy rigged together…

So of course, we bought it anyway.

Give us two years (with a baby and another on the way)

New paint + $60k in upgrades/fixes later (including a new foundation poured and room built where there was just a 2x4 holding up the living room, two new kitchens, entirely new plumbing throughout, all new fixtures, floors, fixed plaster, added drywall, finished the basement, landscaping, etc…)

And four years later…

We finished the house.

It turned out stunning and we were then considered handy and had acquired every tool 😉

What started as we just honestly have no idea turned into a giant nightmare.

At one point we even gave up and hired a contractor to come in and do it for us, he took our money and ran 🥹💀

After a drawn out legal battle of him completely ghosting us and harassing our attorney, he walked away with a new truck but no job and his then business partner paid us back (!!!)

Seriously the worst type of person

But in the very end, we (or really, just me, Mercedes) am glad we bought the house 😉

It sold in a day basically and the new owners love it just as much as we did!

Swipe to see the before!

Can you count all the changes we made??

I really couldn’t figure out what decor could bring together

Off white

With stark with

With purple white

And then yellow-white 🤔

So I decided let’s get rid of at least two of those whites drawing from the whites in the countertop & tile- which turned out to be a beige & a purple blue!!

We used for the high quality cabinet paint and the durable wall paint!

Turned the fan into a fan/light fixture to bring in more light

And brought the heaviness of the black tile over to the mirror from

And now those shower tiles POP and feel like they go perfectly with the whole bathroom!

Of course we had to go with bright white towels to bring in more bright white!

And here’s a little secret, other than the floating shelves *themselves* there isn’t decor and I don’t feel that the bathroom is lacking!

Everything is functional for a bathroom!

Absolutely love this sophisticated boy’s room we just finished up at our River Side project!

As the flip side to the girl’s room we shared earlier it is a complete 180 from it 🤭

We really honed in on the mature boy vibe, giving lots of room to grow into it while also making it comfortable for any age!

We went minimal on the decor while bringing in lots of warm features to accent the moody & busy walls

While making it cozy, bold, and rich!

Can you believe the before??

Also, do you have a closet like this that’s just 75% unusable?

Well, we found a way to use all of it!! 👏🏻👏🏻

Thanks again to my dear clients who let us tear this room up and start over!

It’s so rewarding to see it all come together ✨

Spring is hoppening 🐰 all around my house!

Although I don’t have many seasonal decorations, it still feels springy, fresh, and ready for a new start 🌿

My top ways to make subtle changes for the seasons are:

Open cookbooks to a seasonal dish (or treat 😉) and put it on display in a book holder

Changing pillows, throw blankets, candles, greenery

Adding a bowl of seasonal fruit/veggies! Lemons felt like springtime to me 🍋

Adding fresh cut flowers (I do have lots and lots of faux so I always try to keep real in the house to bring in that extra bit of realness!) 💐

And throwing in just a few of my springy friends (I think I have three bunnies out in total this year!)

So if you’re feeling the pressures of needing to hoard an entire box of bunnies & bright colored eggs, don’t worry! That’s not the only way to go about his season!

My simplistic approach may be just enough 🥰
