What is Base Rock?
Base rock is the compacted layer of aggregate installed beneath the finished paving surface. It helps support the pavement, distribute the weight of vehicles, improve stability, and create a solid foundation for the surface above it.

Why the Base Matters in Any Paving Project
The right base isn’t the same for every project. Soil conditions, drainage, slope, traffic, and the type of paving surface all affect how the site should be prepared. When the base is weak, uneven, or poorly compacted, problems can eventually show up on the surface as cracking, settling, potholes, drainage issues, and premature wear.

Base Rock and Surface Paving Work Together

Sometimes the pavement isn’t the real problem.

If cracks, potholes, erosion, or standing water keep coming back, the problem may be underneath or around the pavement.

Good paving starts with understanding where the water goes. On North Bay properties, especially long driveways, private roads, hillsides, and rural sites, proper grading and drainage can make a big difference in how well pavement holds up over time.

If water is allowed to collect beside, beneath, or across pavement, it can weaken the base, wash away supporting material, cause edges to break down, and contribute to cracking and potholes. In those cases, simply putting down new asphalt may make the property look better for a while, but it doesn’t correct the underlying problem.

A properly designed drainage system helps protect the new pavement, reduces the chance of the same damage returning, and can extend the life of the investment.

That’s why, if you’re planning to repave a driveway, private road, or parking lot, it pays to address drainage and other underlying problems first rather than simply paving over them.
