Michael Maltzan’s design reimagines the Arroyo Seco Bridge, a section of the Ventura Freeway (also known as the 134) in Pasadena, CA .
The new structure will collect rainwater which will be partially used to maintain hanging plants on the exterior of the tunnel while the rest of it would be added to the city of Pasadena water supply.
A field of photovoltaic panels along the top of the tunnel is expected to produce about 6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually — enough to power 600 homes. Isn't that cool?

MIT and Masdar Institute of Science and Technology cooperation resulted in producing the most efficient solar panel in the world. The new solar cell is unique, because it layers the typical low-cost silicon solar cell with a gallium arsenide phosphide-based solar cell, which increases the energy efficiency of the panel.
