PLANT OF THE MONTH: Orange Carpet Hummingbird Mint 🌱🎋

Botanical Name: Zauschneria garrettii 'P001S' (also categorized as Epilobium garrettii)

Common Name: Orange Carpet Hummingbird Trumpet / Firechalice

USDA Hardiness Zones: 5 through 9

Plant Type: Creeping Perennial Groundcover

Native Habitat: Rocky slopes and mountain canyons of western North America

When midsummer heat causes traditional perennials to stall, Orange Carpet Zauschneria steps up. Native to the elevated slopes of the Intermountain West, this low-growing perennial forms a dense mat of narrow green foliage that erupts into brilliant scarlet-orange, tubular blooms from late July through autumn.

It acts as a high-performance living mulch, smothering weeds, holding bare soil against erosion, and keeping ground temperatures low all while requiring fraction of the water standard groundcovers demand.

HELP US STAND READY FOR OUR COMMUNITY

As the Frijoles Fire continues to impact our region, Villa Therese Free Clinic is preparing to support first responders, families, and community members who may experience displacement or hardship in the days ahead.

We are beginning an immediate collection of:

• Bottled water
• Electrolyte drinks and hydration packets
• Individually packaged snacks and nonperishable food
• Other basic hydration and relief supplies

Villa Therese is prepared to do more than collect supplies. We have the people, vehicles, clinical resources, and community partnerships to help get them where they are needed.

As conditions evolve, our team is prepared to help distribute donated supplies to first responders and affected communities while also providing access to basic medical assistance and support for individuals who may become separated from essential medications or healthcare because of evacuation or displacement.

For a clinic built around removing barriers to care, this is part of our mission.

When hardship creates a barrier, we step in.

We are asking our friends, partners, businesses, and community members to help us build a supply of essential items now—so that if the need grows, we are ready to respond.

DONATION DROP-OFF:
Villa Therese Clinic Location
1779 Hopewell St., Santa Fe, NM 87505
Monday-Friday 8 am - 4 pm

For larger donations, cases of supplies, or businesses interested in helping, please contact:

Santa Fe has always known how to take care of its own. Together, we can make sure our first responders and neighbors have what they need.

Did you know a single storm can send hundreds of gallons of water rushing off your roof and down the street? Instead of letting that precious resource wash away, a rain garden turns heavy runoff into a thriving, self-sustaining oasis.

Here’s why your yard needs a rain garden:

Sinks & Stores Water: Acting like a natural sponge, a rain garden captures runoff, prevents yard flooding, and recharges local groundwater supply.

Filters Pollution: Soil and plant roots naturally filter out urban debris, fertilizers, and lawn chemicals before they can pollute nearby rivers and streams.

Creates a Pollinator Haven: Planted with deep-rooted native perennials, rain gardens create a resilient habitat for bees, butterflies, and local birds.

Zero-Waste Irrigation: Once established, native rain gardens thrive on natural weather cycles saving you time, money, and tap water.

Mosquito-Free: Unlike stagnant ponds, a properly designed rain garden drains fully within 24 to 48 hours, so mosquitoes never have time to breed!

Want to make your yard more water-resilient this season? Drop a 🌧️ in the comments if you’re ready to catch the rain!
