🍎 Appleton Area Schools Are Back in Session Next Tuesday!
Drivers, it’s time to slow down. Here’s a quick refresher on School Zone Rules in Appleton so everyone stays safe.
🚸 When does the School Speed Limit apply? The reduced speed applies when the conditions established by Wisconsin law are met. This includes when you are passing a schoolhouse while children are present, or when you are passing a school crossing while children are present or a crossing guard is in the roadway.
🚦 Know what triggers the reduced speed. Simply passing a school zone sign does not, by itself, mean the School Speed Limit applies. The legal requirement is based on the specific circumstances described in Wisconsin Statute § 346.57, including the presence of children at or about the schoolhouse or school crossing.
💡 Flashing lights don’t determine when the School Speed Limit applies. Some school zones have flashing beacons or speed feedback signs to draw attention to the area, but these devices do not determine whether the statutory School Speed Limit applies. The School Speed Limit is based on the presence of children and the other conditions established by law, not whether a beacon is flashing.
⏰ School Speed Limits aren’t limited to school hours or the school year. The School Speed Limit can apply at any time, on any day, when the conditions established by Wisconsin law are present. That means drivers should always be alert for children around schools and school crossings, even outside normal school hours or during summer break.
And yes, 15 MPH feels slow. That’s the point. At 15 MPH, drivers have more time to see a child and more time to stop.
