🚧 Project Update! 🚧Scotts Valley is really starting to take shape! We've almost finished the interior dry wall and have completed the arduous task of picking a white interior paint - iykyk. Cabinet installation is following the interior paint, and they're being installed as we write. For the exterior, stucco is well on its way to completion and we're hoping to take down all of the scaffolding in the next few weeks. Next up, a final round of exterior color paint selection! 💪

✅We are in support of and hoping for the passage of Prop 1: The Veterans and Affordable Housing Bond Act of 2026.

The act would provide $11.25B in funding for housing programs in California. This would renew funding for a whole cross-section of effective housing programs, with the bulk of it pairing with federal funding and tax credits to build new lower-income workforce housing. Also in the set of programs to be funded is a veteran program for home purchases (which self-repays through mortgage payments), permanent supportive housing, anti-displacement programs, and infill infrastructure to fund many repairs and upgrades already needed that also enable new housing. A disproportionate amount of this funding ends up helping the least affordable places that have jobs, like Santa Cruz County. We encourage your support of this measure.

Bright Plaza is a proposed 100% Affordable Housing Project, and if you'd live here, we want to hear your voice! We want to hear from renters, working families, and people who may one day live at Bright Plaza. These perspectives are too often underrepresented in local public processes. Potential residents are strongly encouraged to participate.

🚧Project Update! 🚧Clocktower Center is moving right along with 100% of Design Development completed! Our team is currently working on some pricing and exciting amenity floor plans. We're super impressed with the vibe that our interior design team over at has put together. The textures and colors really mimic the beauty of Santa Cruz and we just can't get over it! Up next - diving into the final construction document drawings.

🍂 Fall in Santa Cruz means something new is taking root.

As the season shifts, so does the work of building homes for the people who make this place home — the working families and longtime locals who keep our community whole.

We're always looking at upcoming legislation related to housing and the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act is a collection of many small steps 💪

Even so, it is the most significant housing legislation by the federal government in several decades. Many parties are hoping, and planning, to help make this just a first step to improve and make more meaningful national housing policy 🏡

The new law won't change much for our work in the short term. But over time, we expect a few pieces to help: the single-stairway building code, funding for local zoning reform in places already succeeding at building housing, and fewer bureaucratic roadblocks in federal programs and rules 🚧

As California has been doing for a decade, it's great to see steps being taken at the federal level to start reducing the unnecessary parts of overhead and development costs.

July is often vacation time for all of us here at Workbench, and last month we reveled in it! ☀️

The kids are out of school, the sun is shining, and we're taking the opportunity to slow down and recenter. This summer our team went all over the world 🌎 From New York, to Belgium, to Colorado, to camping right here in California - we went where the wind took us 🍃 Check out these pics of our travels where we were inspired by good food, peaceful nature, gorgeous architecture, and the joy of spending time with our loved ones 😎
