In 1997, Wharton-Smith first appeared on ENR’s Top 400 Contractors list at No. 378. Today, we’re officially No. 89 in the nation and among the Top 100 contractors in the country.

That’s more than a ranking. It’s the result of decades of steady growth, strong relationships, quality work, and people who believe doing things the right way still matters.

For OSHA Safe + Sound Week, we’re highlighting one example of the everyday planning that helps make our jobsites safer.

At the Crest View Ave. WWTF Expansion in Winter Garden, our team recently strengthened its Hazard Communication program by identifying and documenting 142 chemicals and construction-related products onsite. Materials were organized by hazard, incompatible products were separated, Safety Data Sheets were made readily accessible, and dedicated storage was added for LPG cylinders.

It’s detailed work that often happens behind the scenes, but it plays an important role in helping crews understand what they’re working with and reduce risk before an incident occurs.

Safe work is built into the details.

Nearly $15,000 in school supplies collected across Wharton-Smith locations. 🎒📚

As students head back to school, our teams came together to support students in the communities we serve. Employees across our locations collected $7,490 in school supplies, and with Wharton-Smith’s company match, that support grew to nearly $15,000.

In Sanford, our team packed up donations for the Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools, helping local students start the new school year with the supplies they need.

Thank you to everyone across Wharton-Smith who donated, organized, collected, and helped make this company-wide effort possible!

Strong communities are built by people who take the time to understand them, connect across industries, and step up to lead. 🤝

Last night, Jill Wingate, Chief People Officer, and Drew Gumieny, Director of Operations, joined fellow members of Leadership Seminole Class 36 at the Welcome Reception, marking the start of their 10-month journey exploring the people, systems, and issues shaping Seminole County.

Earlier in the day, Sarah Hohman, Wharton-Smith’s Vice President of Marketing and this year’s Chair of the Leadership Seminole Board of Directors, helped facilitate the incoming class as they kicked off the program.

As a Premier Partner of Leadership Seminole, Wharton-Smith helps support the program throughout the year, including class sessions and events that bring together emerging leaders from across the community. Each year, we also send two team members through the program to strengthen their leadership skills, broaden their perspective, and build relationships that extend beyond our organization.

Here’s to a great year ahead for Jill, Drew, and Class 36! 👏

Big infrastructure projects are measured in more than concrete and steel. They’re measured in what they protect and make possible.

Vero Beach’s One Water Campus is moving ahead of schedule, with the first new building now complete and another $25 million in state grant funding secured for the project.

When complete, the campus will bring wastewater treatment, stormwater reclamation and drinking water purification together in one location, while helping reduce environmental impacts on the Indian River Lagoon.

Vero News recently took a closer look at the project, its progress and what it means for the community.

A lot can happen over summer break. 📚🏗️

At Lakeview Middle School, our team used the summer to complete another phase of the school’s comprehensive needs project before students returned for the new school year.

Buildings 200 and 700 were turned over to Wharton-Smith at the end of the last school year for work that included HVAC and HVAC controls upgrades, select electrical improvements, and renovations such as new ceilings, flooring, paint and doors depending on the building and area.

Work now continues on Building 100, the final phase of the project, with turnover currently targeted for November.

It’s one example of the planning and coordination that happens behind the scenes to keep school improvements moving while students and staff continue using the campus. 🎒

One helps keep water infrastructure moving. The other helps first responders reach people faster. Both were recognized for excellence in construction. 🏆

At the ABC Florida First Coast Excellence in Construction Awards, two Wharton-Smith projects took home honors:

🦅 Peter’s Creek WRF Expansion | Eagle Award
Built within an active treatment facility, the project required major process upgrades while maintaining uninterrupted wastewater treatment. The expansion also included approximately 77,300 feet of reclaimed water, force main and potable water piping, with crossings beneath wetlands and major roadways.

🔺 DeBary Fire Station #39 | Pyramid Award
Located west of the railroad tracks in southern DeBary, the new three-bay station was strategically built to strengthen emergency response in a growing part of the community, including improved access when rail traffic could otherwise create delays.

Different projects, different challenges, same result: infrastructure built to serve communities for years to come.

Congratulations to the project teams, trade partners, clients and everyone whose work made these recognitions possible!
