New drought update for Maine and I don't have to tell you the news is not good.

Limited rainfall last week has contributed to the expansion of moderate and severe drought. Nearly all of Maine is now at least abnormally dry or in level 1 drought.

Overall drier than average conditions are expected into the Fall with drought persisting as El Nino gets stronger and the southern jet stream dominates.

UPDATED DROUGHT MONITOR...

The lack of significant rainfall over the last six weeks means we are slipping back into drought. From the Portland area eastward through all of the Midcoast to Penobscot Bay, the drought is now considered severe. This matches up with what we've heard from many of you.

The foothills and mountains have picked up adequate rain; the drought is not currently a concern there.

For example, since July 1, only 1.61" of rain has fallen in Wiscasset. 5.49" of rain has fallen in Bethel.

It's not unusual to see such a difference in the summertime, as storms often weaken as they approach the coast. However, since we were teetering on the edge of drought six weeks ago, it was easier to slip back into it with below average rainfall.
